The annual Trangie junior judging day will be held on July 13, the first day of school holidays.
This year it will again be run at the Trangie Research Centre, located just a few kilometres west of the town on the Mitchell Highway.
The cattle section has facilities perfect for containing the stock and the many competitors with plenty of open space.
The full day’s program includes competitions
in beef cattle, Merino sheep, meat sheep (Border Leicesters and Poll Dorsets), Merino fleeces and, unique
to Trangie, a cotton section.
The format is unusual for a junior judging competition as each competitor, whether junior (up to 15 years) or senior, is able to participate in all sections.
The judging day often draws students from Trangie,Warren, Narromine, Nevertire, Tottenham, Parkes, Dubbo, Gilgandra, Gulargambone, Gulgong and Orange districts.
Many previous winners of the senior section have gone on to win at regional and State level (the Sydney Royal Easter Show) after gaining what they called “valuable experience”.
Students in the junior section learn hints from skilled overjudges in each section as they judge livestock and the agricultural commodities.
All competitors have a chance of winning some great prizes from generous sponsors or seeing their name engraved on trophies.
Many of the trophies date back to the 1940s and are engraved with the names of former junior judging champions.
A fleece-judging trophy has been donated by the Phillips family and this year Trish Phillips intends to continue this tradition in memory of her late husband Lyall’s support for the day.
The day will start with a 9am registration at the cattle section.
The entry fee for the day is just $10, which includes a barbecue lunch and cool drinks.
Of course the day would not be the same without many competitors’ parents kindly
providing a home-baked slice or cake to keep
the hungry hordes happy.
