Chance to watch missile launch

03 Jul, 2009 04:55 PM
The Cold War may be over but all systems will be go in Narromine next week when locals get the chance to witness a simulated missile launch.

In 1984 the Titan Missile museum in Arizona was one of the most secretive places in the United States.

During the Cold War it was one missile site in a network of nuclear warheads designed to repel the Soviets.

The silo housed the Titan 2 Missile which could be launched in less than a minute from its position 150 feet beneath the Sonoran Desert

The United States began closing all of its missile sites in the 1980s, except the one in Arizona which was converted into a museum.

And thanks to technology the Narromine Community Technology Centre will be hosting an interactive missile launch on July 11.

Developed by Aloha AV Installations the simulation will take viewers into the bowels of Arizona’s missile silo via a live video feed.

Greg Smart, from Aloha AV, admits it is a “far out” idea but said the pay off in terms of education and entertainment was extraordinary.

“It is exactly like what people would see if they were there, but they will be able to see it without leaving Narromine,” Mr Smart said.

A presenter will be talking live from the control room via equipment Aloha staff installed when they visited the facility in May.

“It’s not just video, he is talking directly to the camera, people can ask questions and the cameras can move around as he gives a run down on what it’s like to launch a missile,” Mr Smart said.

The ‘launch’ will be a pilot run for a program that the Dubbo company is planning to introduce into NSW schools.

Mr Smart said Australia was a “world leader” in video education because of the country’s vastness and remotely situated students.

The day will start at 10am at the Community Technology Centre on June 11.

Entry is $5, to book a seat contact Christina Cherry on 6889 9980 by June 10.
