Australia Day was celebrated in the true Aussie spirit in Trangie yesterday despite the wet weather. A number of people from the local community turned out to listen to the Australia Day Ambassador, Terry Clark speak, and for the annual Australia Day awards.
Mayor Bill McAnally had the honour of announcing the awards which went to well deserved recipients.
Trangie’s Citizen of the Year for 2012 went to Allan Kinsey.
“Allan Kinsey has been a very active community member on various committees and community groups for many years,” councillor McAnally said.
“Allan was on the committee that built Kurrajong Court Retirement Village and now at age 82 the planning and building of two, two bedroom retirement villas.
“He was also a founding committee member of the Narromine Trangie Irrigation Scheme and the silo committee and later helped create a co-op to build the large grain shed.”
Allan was also heavily involved with the saleyards, NSW Farmers - Trangie Branch, Trangie Tennis Club, Trangie Golf Club, Trangie Bowling Club, Trangie Agricultural Show and Trangie Cricket Club and held positions on all of those committees.
“Allan helped the Trangie Water Skiing group clear the river of logs, which allowed many skiers years of entertainment,” councillor McAnally said.
“Allan is a very worthy recipient of the Citizen of the Year Award, congratulations Allan.”
The Community Event of the Year went to Quilts, Art and More Quilts. The Cotton Country Quilters hosted a patchwork and art exhibition in “the shed” at Karamea, Trangie in March 2011.
The exhibition was opened by Mayor Bill McAnally at a cocktail party attended by more than 100 people.
The following day an afternoon of quilts and art continued to be displayed with afternoon tea attended by more than 250 people.
“More than $10,000 was donated by the Cotton Country Quilters from this event to the Trangie Cancer Support Group, Trangie retirement unit, the Melanoma Institute and Carewest Lodge in Orange,” councillor McAnally said.
“Congratulations to the Cotton Country Quilters on holding such a great event and winning the Community Event of the Year.”
Junior Sports Person of the Year went to both Braden Carney and Charlie Bible.
“Braden was a member of the Australian Indigenous school boys rugby union team which won the interschool Australian championships and toured New Zealand,” councillor McAnally said.
“Braden also played Group 11 under 18 years representative rugby league at the age of 16 and he was also selected in Western Academy Rugby League and selected in Gold squad for under 18 rugby union.”
At school, Charlie Bible has proudly led his sports team by example and sportsmanship.
“He was awarded Senior Boy Swimming and Athletic Champion,” councillor McAnally said.
“Charlie represented his school at cluster level in all events at both swim and athletics carnivals and was selected to represent his state in Rugby League. Only two country children were selected in this team to compete in Melbourne for a week against other states.
“During Charlie’s many achievements he has remained humble and unassuming, often supporting or encouraging others,” councillor McAnally said.
“Congratulations Braden and Charlie on a well deserved Junior Sports Person of the Year Award.”
Young Citizen of the Year went to Jade Clark yesterday.
Councillor McAnally said Jade is a bright and vibrant member of the Community.
“She is welcoming and responsive to citizens of all ages and is able to communicate appropriately with all,” he said.
“Jade helps out in a great number of organisations and for a girl of just 17, she has contributed immensely to the Trangie community.
“Whilst doing all of the above volunteer work, Jade has also completed Year 12 at St John’s College in Dubbo and will be studying nursing at Charles Sturt University in Bathurst.
“She is a very worthy recipient of the Young Citizen of the Year Award, Congratulations Jade,” councillor McAnally concluded.
Congratulations to all award recipients in Trangie on your success and contribution to the community.
