Man faces charge of murdering baby girl

09 Oct, 2009 02:34 PM
A man charged with the murder of a baby in Narromine appeared in Dubbo Local Court on Wednesday via audiovisual link.

The matter was adjourned for three weeks for a pathologist’s report to be completed.

Coroners indicated to the prosecution on September 23 that the report could be fast-tracked and completed in that time.

The 19-year-old Narromine man, accused of the fatal assault of a six-month-old baby girl, could not be named for legal reasons.

He was arrested on April 29 this year by detectives attached to the State Crime Command’s Joint Investigation Response Squad.

The baby’s injuries and death were under investigation by police for two weeks after receiving reports on April 14 that she had sustained severe head injuries while at a home at Narromine, according to a release from police earlier this year.

She was airlifted from Dubbo to Sydney Children’s Hospital, where she died four days later.

A department of health spokesperson said the baby was limp and unresponsive when she was taken to Narromine Hospital on April 14.

Strike Force Aline, comprising detectives from the Joint Investigation Response Squad, with assistance from the Homicide Squad and Orana Local Area Command, was established to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death.

Following extensive investigations, detectives arrested the 19-year-old man at the Dubbo Police Station on April 29 and he appeared in court later that day.

Since that date the accused has appeared four more times before a Dubbo magistrate.

He made no application for bail on Wednesday and will appear again via audiovisual link in Dubbo Local Court on November 4 for reply.
