Four Narromine athletes attended the NSW Athletics Country Championships held at Glendale, Newcastle on the last weekend in January.
This competition is open to registered athletes of all ages from across the state, excluding only the Sydney metropolitan area.
All four athletes had a fantastic time as well as achieving several personal bests.
Former member of Narromine Little A’s Blake McDonald, no longer eligible to compete at Little A’s as he is over 17, attended the carnival not having thrown a javelin in competition for more than 12 months.
At the last round Blake was sitting in first position with a throw of 46.35m, only to be pipped at the post to claim a respectable second and a silver medal.
Max Barber, current U13 Narromine Little A’s member and a first timer at the Country Championships, gained a bronze medal in his javelin event with a throw of 23.92m.
Max’s efforts are even more amazing when taking into account the heavier javelin weights used at these championships in comparison to Little A’s competitions.
Max also achieved the silver medal in a fiercely competitive discus event with a throw of 27.61m.
In the U14 girls javelin Kaitlin Butcher won the gold medal with a PB of 29.51m.
Again, this was a great achievement as Kaitlin was throwing the heavier javelin for the first time.
The youngest member of the squad, Aiden Butcher U11, achieved a gold medal in his shot put with a throw of 9.31m.
Aiden also won a gold medal and set a new NSW Country championship record with his discus throw of 27.91m, beating the old record by more than 1.5 metres.
Narromine Little A’s president and very proud dad Greg Butcher said that once again this was a very good carnival with a laid- back country atmosphere but still drawing very strong competition from across the state with the exclusion of Sydney metro.
“For all the kids to medal at this event is an amazing effort.
“It is a wonderful reward and recognition of all the hard work they have put in throughout the season,” Mr Butcher concluded.
