The first championship match for 2012 was scheduled for last weekend, with round one of the club fours the designated format. With some nine teams nominated for this event, the majority of the sides had a bye, but not President Kevie’s All Stars who did a nice demolition job on Rick Bohm’s quartet. A good crowd was on hand to witness what most pundits thought should be a close battle, but alas it soon became obvious that Kevin and his team mates’ red-hot form, particularly from his Third Steven #$%#@!& Riley, and a bit of no luck for Rick’s four meant for a tough day at the office for the latter team. Whilst the final score of 25/7 certainly indicates a dominant performance, there were plenty of occasions throughout the match where Rick’s team held good shots only to see one or more of Kevin’s team play a “bomb” to change the head around. So next weekend sees the winners advance to the quarter finals where their opponents will be Mal Dawes, Bill Wilkie, Arnold Gillespie and Don Sullivan, so it won’t get any easier for them, but if they can put in a similar performance they may well advance to the semi-finals, time will tell. Other matches in this event see Bruce Maher, Robert Bateman, Peter Cross and John Edwards take on Graham King, Bob Ashdown, Peter Payne and Aaron Hutchison. Mark Hilder, Alex Sambrook, Budd Cape and Robert French line up against Mick Weir, John Heterick, Geoff Anderson and Phil Harding, whilst in the last game it will be the quartet of Don Gibson, Bill Shaw, Danny Carnevale and David McNair go into battle against Peter Kelly, Brian Bulley, Norm Newman and Stephen Buttsworth. All matches have been programmed to commence at 1.30pm but by mutual agreement may be played earlier in the day.
Social bowls last week were again curtailed due to Mother Nature sticking her bib in, so we only managed just the one game, that being Thursday afternoon where some 24 gentlemen went around. The full wrap of the day’s play went this way: on rink nine Clifton Harris, Peter (sore ears) Cross and Kevin Rider defeated Bob Davis, Phil Harding and Danny Carnevale 18/15 in a very torrid encounter. On rink 10 it was the trio of David Price, Bruce Livingston and David McNair who got the chocolates with a comprehensive 29/16 win over George Shearwood, Wayne Beahan and Arnold Gillespie. On rink 11 Brian Bulley, Bruce Maher and Robert French had a comfortable 22/15 win over Gordon McIntyre, Geoff Bohm and Bill Prosser, whilst in the final match on rink 12 we saw a squeaky one-shot win to Josh Coen, Robert Bateman and Ray Cross over Chris Harding, Steven Riley and Don Sullivan, the score being 18/17 to the aforementioned winners. The Judge, the right horrible HQ Gammon, was again in charge of proceedings and ruled first prize money to David Price, Bruce Livingston and David McNair, with second spot being awarded to Brian Bulley, Bruce Maher and Robert French. The jackpot prize pool of just over $100 also jumped up, this time the lucky recipients being Clifton Harris, Peter Cross and Kevin Rider.
The Central West Surveying and Civil Friday night mixed bowls event will now be extended for a week; owing to last week’s wet weather. Just a reminder that this weekly pointscore event kicks off at 6.30pm on Friday nights. Anyone is welcome to come along, bowlers and non-bowlers, and you only have to have your name in before 6pm on the night to ensure you get a start.
Nomination sheets for a couple of club championship events have been posted on the notice board, namely the “A” Pairs and “B” Pairs events. With both scheduled to commence in February there isn’t a great deal of time to get yourself organised, so sooner rather than later should be your plan of attack to get your teams entered.
It is a similar story to the nominations sheets for the listed district events, and again if you are thinking, or wishing to play in either the district fours and or triples, these close mid-February, not that far away so get your teams in now.
Well not much more to report on this week, did notice that “Micky Dix” has a sale on at the moment; plenty of bargains to be had, so if you’re interested in buying some new bowls, a bag or some clothing, have a look at the extensive catalogue posted on the old notice board for full details on what’s available and the price.
