Final five doing battle in mixed pairs competition

2/10/2008 10:38:00 AM
Well what’s been happening, what’s happening this weekend and what about all the important stuff about to happen, yes my mate Bill Lawry would be in raptures, there’s plenty to report, so get your glasses out and get a coffee, it might take a while to get through.

First up the mixed pairs and we are down to the last five.

The catch-up game, by mutual arrangement between team 01: Pam Roberts and partner Arnold Gillespie and team 02: Lynda and John Edwards will take place some time on Saturday, sorry I can’t be more specific, but “Puddy” keeps these things pretty close to the chest and he no doubt will be playing at a time not necessary in the official slot.

So after we get down to the last four the following weekend, the semi-finals of this event will be conducted and hopefully the final will be scheduled before the month is over.

The nomination sheet for our final championship event for 2008 went up on the notice board, namely the mixed triples and with first-round action scheduled for Saturday October 25 interested players and or teams have only a few weeks to get themselves nominated for this event.

With summer just around the corner our annual Friday Night Business House Competition has been set down to commence with a night of sorts on Friday October 24.

The flyers for this event have been distributed around town this week and hopefully we should get a few teams for this always-popular yearly event.

The competition will run over the eight weeks leading up to Christmas with weekly prizes on offer as well as trophies for the best performed teams at the end of the event. There will be a few changes from past seasons but the aim will still be to encourage new players to come along and have a go.

The annual report has been posted to all members last week with the date for our Annual General Meeting set down for Sunday October 19.

Nominations for the board of management are now being called for and no doubt there will be plenty of debate about how the club is going and what we need to do in the future, after people have read the annual report. It’s not a time for political comments, but I would hope we get plenty of nominations, rather than people having plenty to say but not prepared to get in and have a go.

Thursday October 16 has been scheduled for a Veteran’s Day for the Narromine Bowling Club. Players will have an opportunity to win the time-honoured Merv Elder Shield.

The nomination sheet for this day has been posted on the old notice board, with players reminded of the playing conditions whereby teams may only have one player less than 60 years of age in them and if so this player cannot skip the rink.

The format is of course triples with play set down to commence at 10am and with lunch and another game in the afternoon the entry fee has been kept down to a very reasonable cost.

The dress code for the day is creams, and there will be prizes on offer for morning and afternoon as well as overall.

Social bowls on Thursday saw a tidy field of 28 go round with teams drawn from the hat, and the AJC handicapper could not have done a better job of weighing up each team’s chances.

There were five rinks contested and usually that would mean five winning teams and therefore five losing teams, but in the final wash-up we had three teams win their game but of these three teams only one team had a positive result whereby they won the game and the majority of the 21 ends contested.

The other two winning teams, although in front on the scoreboard, did not finish in front of the ends contested, and with two rinks having a draw the games organiser had to go to the jury to get the final verdict.

Correct weight was finally declared and while there was almost a protest or two the winners of the day were Peter Kelly, Robert Bateman and Robbie Stanford with 16 points, whilst the runners-up cheque went to Geoffrey Bohm and Mick Edwards who scored 13 1/2 points.

The jackpot was not won, surprise, surprise, surprise and next week should be in excess of $200.

Sunday morning chicken run produced some 22 hardy souls who played in pristine conditions, pity some of my bowls weren’t. Yours truly led in the winners namely Bob Weir, Pat Randell and Peter Payne who won 17/06 and whilst I don’t blame anyone for the result those yellow hats haven’t been lucky. The runners-up on the morning were the pairs combination of Reg Haddon and Danny Carnevale who just nudged out Cliff and Doc 14/8 in a good battle.

With the long weekend coming up this weekend a number of our players will be going out of town to play in the usual Money Tournaments around the traps and we wish them the best of luck.

Also Matthew and Mickey McIntyre have performed very well in junior events this past month with Matthew part of the NSW Junior Fours Team competing in the prestigious Grand Prix event at Taren Point just last weekend. Matthew and Mickey also competed in the under 25’s Singles event played in conjunction with this Grand Prix, with Matthew getting through the early rounds before bowing out in the quarter finals.

Mickey’s performance cannot be understated, for although he was defeated in the first round, it was to the current State Skipper at this level and it was a sudden death tie-breaker result that decided the issue.

And finally the Wrong Bias Tin has proven a boon, but not for some, right Tallywack.
