New team ‘coasts’ to prize pool win

12/11/2008 10:39:00 AM
Business House Bowls is going well with new players turning up each week to have a go and enjoy the night.

Last week’s results saw one of our new teams get a prize even though the score card was certainly not in their favour.

The results for last week

saw Enza pick the right coaster out of the pack to earn the first prize pool.

Lucky Micky McIntyre made it two for two with his selection to earn the runners-up spot, while the new kids on the block - aka the Foxy Rollers - got some consolation for their efforts by gaining the lucky loser’s prize.

The draw for Friday November 14:

Rink 08: Hospital v Foxy Rollers

Rink 09: Girls Tyres v NCS

Rink 10: Shanks Trailers v Wild Turkeys

Rink 11: Enza v Jemalong Wool

Rink 12: Webby’s Warriors v Boys Tyres

Championship matches were played last weekend and what interesting results they were.

In a week where there were winners of our most prestigious horse races at huge odds, the same sort of thing happened at our track.

Min Porter, June Hill and Bruce Maher would have been at big odds to defeat Helen Woolfe, Janet Klintworth and Robert French, and I am sure the window tappers were certainly surprised at the calibre of bowls the underdogs played, particularly Bruce.

But that’s the nature of this game and so this team now goes into the next match and should be confident about their chances after that performance.

The other game played on Saturday resulted in a win for Annette Lincoln, Des Lincoln and Neil Bootle over Jan Buswell, Barry Riley and Bruce Livingston which sees them now have a week off before they play the winner of Bruce Maher verses Kevin Rider in the final.

Whatever the result this should certainly make for an interesting affair.

So next week’s championship matches are pretty straight forward: Game 01: M Porter, J Hill, and B Maher verses D Barry, S Buttsworth and K Rider.

Social Bowls numbers were again pretty good this week with 28 players on Thursday, 26 going around on Saturday afternoon and some 20 keen boys having a hit-out on Sunday morning.

Firstly Thursdays results - and in one of his rare visits to the playing field Rick Bohm guided his team-mates Cranky and Flooby in typical J North fashion (from the bank) to a comfortable win over Barry ‘Don’t call me XXXX’, Riley, Reg and Jimmy, and in doing so got the chocolates from the fast-finishing team of Ray Cross, Kevin Heatrick, and Cliff Harris.

The jackpot of $92 was not won so next week will jump into the magic ton.

Quite a few wrong bias bowls were played last Thursday and our little tin is getting a workout each week.

Some lucky charity in town will be the recipient of this tin and if the form continues in the same vein it won’t be long before they get the cheque, and this is without ‘Tallywack’ in the picture, although it won’t be long now - the knee’s looking fitter each day.

Saturday evening, and apart from Cranky adding to the white tin, twice, the highlight of the afternoon was just simply the fun this group of bowlers was having.

When he wasn’t putting down wrong biases Cranky must have played some decent ones, for at the end of the day he and team-mates Bev Bulley and Tony Perino

collected the chocolates for the best-performed team on the day, just edging out Edna McMillan, Dawn Barry and Cliff Bullock

who collected the runners-up prize for their win over John Edwards and team-mates Brian and Colleen.

Brian and Colleen were in good form and from all reports played very well, but the champ couldn’t help them this time around.

Sunday morning results saw the pairs teams the dominating factor, with all the prizes going to these two winning rinks.

The lion’s share of the prize pool went to Cliff Harris and Robert Bateman who put the cleaners through Curly and Geoff 19/03, scoring some 12 points along the way.

The runners-up Jimmy Daley and Stephen Riley collected a bottle of refreshment for their ‘Tuff’ win over the Short brothers Kevin and Les.

The runners-up scored 10 points and had to survive a countback from Peter Payne’s winning rink, but as usual to be a chance you must win that last end Major, not tip out a four.

Tickets are now on sale for our annual presentation night on Saturday December 6.

At a reasonable cost of $20, this night promises to be the highlight of the year.

With numbers limited, don’t delay - book your table of eight or simply purchase your ticket from the bar. Music will be first class, with Dick Jeffries and the Rubba Band in full swing, a smorgasbord meal and a host of other surprises.

So why not come along, you don’t have to be a bowler to enjoy a great night up at the Bowly.

And finally, a nomination sheet for the 2009 pennant season has been posted on the club notice board. Intending players are requested to nominate before the end of this month to give selectors a chance to put together some sort of program for next year.
