Teams from surrounding towns including Orange, Mudgee, Parkes, Dubbo, Wellington and more will be competing against our Macquarie Emus’ teams in under 7’s, under 9’s and under 11’s in what promises to be a great day out.
Paul Bartlett, club president, is urging the community to head along to the gala day.
“It would be great to see people come along to Alan Burns Oval in Trangie on Sunday to watch some wonderful junior rugby,” Mr Bartlett said.
Macquarie Emus was set up 17-odd years ago and the original committee was formed from people in Narromine, Warren and Trangie. Over the years it quickly grew to having players from Gulargambone, Nyngan, Tullamore, Nymagee, Tottenham and more recently Cobar players have joined the ranks.
“Player numbers usually run between 40 to 60,” Mr Bartlett said.
“This number is made up of boys and some girls in under 7’s, 9’s and 11’s.
“Some of these children and their loyal parents travel hundreds of kilometres just for the Sunday games and for that reason we pride ourselves on no training runs.”
Each Sunday the teams each play at least three games and all coaches give training tips and drills on the day.
According to Mr Bartlett Macquarie Emus is a unique club of characters all loyal to the core.
“Players and parents alike make life- long friends from surrounding districts,” he said.
“Nobody likes letting their team mates down. Whilst every Sunday is not compulsory, players drag their parents (or somebody else in a car pool) long distances to be with their weekend mates.
“In our over-busy lives it is vital that a club like Macquarie Emus continues to survive. Not just for the mateship or the proud history of breeding two Wallaby players in Pat McCutcheon and Ben McCalman, but more importantly if there was no Mac Emus, western boys and girls wouldn’t get the chance to learn and play the rugby union game.”
The gala day kicks off at 9am this Sunday at Trangie’s Alan Burns Oval and will wrap up at 1pm.
So why not enjoy a weekend morning out by supporting the Macquarie Emus.
