This Sunday Narromine will see the return of representative basketball to the Narromine Sports Centre after many years of absence.
Teams from Mudgee, Gilgandra and Narromine will play 20 games of basketball starting at 9am and finishing at 5.30pm. Age groups will range from U10 mixed, U12 boys and girls, U14 boys and girls, U16 boys and girls, U18s boys and girls and open men and women.
Narromine basketball has a historic record stemming back to 1971. In December 1973 Narromine U15 girls was the first team to represent at State Championships at Alexandria in Sydney and on February 3 in 1974, in Dubbo, this same team became the first in the area to defeat Lithgow in a championship.
One of these players, Maryann Cape (nee Smith), has now returned to basketball and is thoroughly enjoying it and will be playing in the open women’s team. Former state player Wendy Richardson (nee Weir) is also playing.
Narromine basketball association has had four state players: Pam Mill, Wendy Richardson, Rachael Abbott and Peter Butcher. The open women’s team were back-to-back champions of NSW State League in 1986 and 1987 and played in the Australian Championships on two occasions and also represented in Vanuatu in 1984.
Narromine U14 boys in 1977 represented the Australian Club Championships in Tasmania and the Narromine U14 girls in 1978 represented the Australian Club Championships in Sydney.
Both these teams gained their position in these championships after being both rated third in the state.
Throughout these years Narromine basketball employed two development officers, American Kent Apply and former Narromine player Don McCarron.
Narromine basketball has a long history of successful teams and players so let’s bring it back again.
Players can train in town and represent Narromine as the Stingers in the green and gold colours.
We welcome as many community members as possible to come along and cheer on our teams.
