With the full moon and the syzygy (trivia buffs can look this one up) about to happen the scene was set for an exciting night at the Narromine Bowling Club. The hosts for this trivia night were Kevin Rider and Linda Edwards ably supported by enthusiastic helpers.

The night was raising funds for the 25 Club whose members (limited to 25 only) raise money for worthwhile causes in Narromine. In their 40 years the 25 club has raised nearly $250,000 for The NSW Ambulance Service, Fire Brigade, Rural Fire Service, Timbrebongie House and helping in the refurbishment of the Day Care Centre at the Narromine Hospital to name but a few. In 2013 they won The Community Event of the Year Award.
Newbies dominated the night but the stalwarts of Bogan Barflies (plus extras) and the Blue Wrens kept the balance.
Kevin laid down the law, as presidents are allowed to do, and decreed that the printed answers were to be the only answers accepted and this was soon tested with the first round of Movie Titles.
Another topical question was, “How far in metres is the Melbourne Cup run? One would say 3200 right? Some teams put in a protest that it was actually 3218 metres! According to “my sources”, the first race was held in 1861, over two miles (about 3,218.688 metres), but was shortened to 3200 metres in 1972 when Australia adopted the metric system. This reduced the distance by 18.688 metres (61.31 ft)” thus to the nearest metre would be 3219 prior to 1972, so that should settle the argument once and for all. Or does it?
Other rounds included Sports, Aussie Aussie Aussie, Four Letter Answers, This or That and finally a picture round of Where Was I Born? (Ha! Who knew Tony Abbtot was a “Pom”).
The usual Heads or Tails/True or False was held with the first question eliminating all contestants so a presidential decree was for a second round to be held. Let me ask you this, Winston Churchill won a Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954 – true or false? (The answer will be revealed at the end of the article).
The Baffler question did indeed baffle the majority of the teams with three teams eventually guessing the correct answer then there were two and eventually the Bogan Barflies (plus extras) reigned supreme.
Overall winners on the night were the Vegies by one point from the Bogan Bar Flies who finished just ahead of the Blue Wrens.
The supper provided was delightful as ever and the lemon jam slice was spectacular (in my opinion anyway).
A total of $841 was raised on the night and presented to the 25 Club by Kevin Rider.
Where were the All the Presidents Men and Cats Dogs and Strays I hear you say? Sadly they were absent due to other commitments but reliable sources say they will be back bigger and brighter (??) for the next night which is to be held May 20 in support of the Lions Club of Narromine so we would like to see you all there for a fun time. Almost forgot, the true or false, indeed Winston Churchill did win a Nobel Prize for Literature but it was in 1953 so the answer is false.
