Members of the public have been asked to keep a look out for Alessandro Bongiorno, 29, and to call triple-0 immediately if they see him or his missing four-year-old son, Brae.
Police say Mr Bongiorno collected his son from a childcare facility in Grafton about 3pm on Monday. Mr Bongiorno was seen driving away from the centre in his 2008-model white Toyota Hilux 4WD, with NSW registration plates AY 44 NI.
He or his son have not been seen since.
Mr Bongiorno is believed to have had an argument with the boy's mother shortly before taking his son from the childcare centre.
Police said Mr Bongiorno was known to have connections in Horsley Park in western Sydney and in Young, on the south-west slopes of NSW, and could be heading towards those locations.
Mr Bongiorno was last seen wearing a black singlet with white trim and a pair of shorts. He is about 175 centimetres tall, with a medium build, olive complexion, and black hair.
Police have urged members of the public not to approach Mr Bongiorno, but to call triple-0 immediately if they see him or his vehicle.
