The predictions of a top game of rugby between first-placed Wellington Redbacks and second-placed Trangie Tigers at Trangie on Saturday proved to be correct.
The game was arguably the best of the season. Although the Tigers lost 17-13 they know they can match the minor premiers.
The Tigers were first to score when Richard Flinn kicked a penalty goal, however the lead was short-lived as the Redbacks crossed over out wide for an unconverted try.
The Tigers try came after sustained pressure on the Wellington line, the Tigers’ ball control and discipline was finally rewarded when number 8, Michael Sharpe crossed over, with Richard Flinn adding the extras.
The Tigers dominated the end of the first half and the beginning of the second half and extended their lead with a penalty goal to Richard Flinn.
It looked as though the Tigers might be able to cause an upset, but the Redbacks came back with two tries late in the game to take the match.
For the second week in a row the Tigers have allowed their opponents several late tries. A problem that coach, James Austin and the players will need to address.
This weekend is the last round of competition before the top five sides battle it out in the semis.
It sees the Tigers play the lowly-placed Cumnock Stallions at Cumnock, knowing if they can win with a bonus point they will finish second on the ladder, if not they will finish third behind the Wellington Redbacks and the Mudgee Wombats.
