Dubbo Duty Officer Inspector Mitchell Croyston said there were serious fears for his safety as the missing man was suffering from a medical condition.
“We made inquiries and his mobile telephone led us to this area.”
“They [the family] were concerned, we don’t know why he has felt it necessary to come to this area.”
A command post was established in bushland near the Geurie Cemetery and police soon widened their search radius using extensive resources including motor bikes, a PolAir chopper and help from the SES and Volunteer Rescue Association.
Steve Meadows was last seen leaving his home at Dubbo yesterday morning (Thursday), but failed to return home by 6pm the same day.
Family were unable to contact him and police began their search after 6pm that night, resuming at 7.45am today.
He was last seen wearing a long-sleeved grey skivvy and jeans and driving a White Holden Astra with the number plate AI 31 TN.
He is described as being of Caucasian appearance, medium build, about 180cm tall, brown hair and green eyes.
Inspector Croyston urged the public to contact Dubbo police or Crimestoppers if they have any information on his whereabouts.
