The 28-year-old alleged offender cannot be named due to laws protecting children.
Prosecution documents tendered to Dubbo Local Court said the baby sustained actual bodily harm during an assault alleged to have occurred between 3pm and 11.59pm on October 11 last year. The man was arrested on June 4.
He showed no emotion during an appearance before Magistrate Andrew Eckhold.
Legal Aid said the matter was unusual and involved "a lot of medical evidence".
Magistrate Eckhold adjourned the charge to August 27. Interim apprehended violence orders were imposed to protect the child who has the same surname as the alleged offender.
