Joey was airlifted from Oberon on Sunday afternoon in a critical condition suffering severe head injuries.
Medical specialists were yesterday still considering options for the child’s treatment.
Detective Inspector Luke Rankin from Chifley local area command said emergency services were called to a Cunynghame Street, Oberon address about 1pm on Sunday to treat a boy having a cardiac arrest.
Inspector Rankin said all they know at this stage is that the boy, along with his mother and stepfather, were at the Oberon Recreation Ground, opposite their home, with the family’s two dogs, an alsatian and husky.
A crime scene was established at the family home and police are continuing to call for witnesses to come forward.
