The night was but young when quizmaster Rick called teams to order for the trivia quiz in support of the Narromine combined schools.

A new quizzing term of "doodads" was introduced into the realm by Rick along with the advice "if you don't know what to do we will help you out".
The author is not sure whether this would walk the new teams into a gold mine or a mine field.
By the official start time of the stroke of seven, 15 teams had registered with more filing in through the door.
Laden with food for supper and ready to support this good cause, entrants had to decide on registering or assisting with the catering and so tough a choice someone almost left the best bit of supper in front of Rick (almost never to be seen again).
Time to start and among the 19 teams were some of the usual suspects, Flea Bags, Cats and Dogs, Bogan Bar Flies and All the President's Men.
It wasn't all about the stalwarts of trivia with the new ones, Saints and Sinners, Angels and Saints, Gumnuts, OMG, Crayons and This and That to name but a few.
"And they're off", the picture round (round one), the first clue for the baffler (I am a day in history) and teams were engrossed in solving the 10 partial images of famous people.
High scores of between seven and 10 were achieved.
However, the baffler baffled them although the submitted answers were quite amusing.
Round two we had questions on food, (perhaps Rick was correct in pronunciation as round chew), commencing with "Which nut is in a Waldorf salad?''
Round three produced the most debatable question of the night "Which planet theoretically would float in water?"
This type of questioning continued through the night with "The aorta joins the left or right atrium of the heart or the left or right ventricle?"
Rick's able assistant and terrific tabulator Linda knew the answer and was willing to share for a suitable donation to the cause.
There were no takers and this penalised some teams who had chosen to use this as their double round.
The final round was to identify pictures of dogs (which should have suited the Cats and Dogs more than it did) and debate was raised on some breeds, was it a blue heeler or a cattle dog? Could it be a whippet or a greyhound?
In the end it was the newbies that took the rewards for the night with Angels and Demons narrowly ahead of Saints and Sinners and Winner Winner Chicken Dinner taking out third.
The encouragement award was a three-way tie between All the President's Men, Mixed Bag and Preschool, separated with tie-breaker questions.
Did you know that there were 36 black keys on a standard piano keyboard? Did you also know that Michelangelo completed the Sistine Chapel in 1512?
Barb and Des did a wonderful job in raising more with the raffles.
The host nearly found himself in hot water when, after Linda won a basket of beauty products, he commented "You need it!''
Linda took the comment in her stride and the good humour in which it was intended.
She showed she not only possessed outer beauty but inner beauty as well, evidenced when she generously donated the basket back for a re-draw.
Karma struck Rick and he was unable to take away any prizes in the 100 club.
President Kev did the honours, presenting proceeds of the night to the five recipients, who each received nearly $300.
Rick paid tribute to all the assistants for the night and invited all participants to return next month (September 16) in aid of the Cancer Council NSW Community Group.
As this is a very popular night, teams should book in advance to avoid missing out.
Just in case you were wondering, the aorta joins the left ventricle and the Waldorf salad contains walnuts.
