Two Bathurst paramedic crews were called to the scene at 10.30am, with the ambulance rescue helicopter called from Orange to attend.
Chifley Local Area Command Sergeant Paul McCann said the accident occurred about 15 kilometres north of Bathurst.
The 72-year-old driver was travelling north on Turondale Road, near Duramana when his vehicle left the road and struck a tree.
Sergeant McCann said a witness to the accident performed CPR on the man, as did paramedics when they arrived, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police have spoken to a number of witnesses and have so far discounted speed as a cause of the accident.
