Narromine Shire Council is considering switching the Mitchell Highway from Dandaloo Street to Manildra Street in a bid to further reduce congestion in the main street.
NSW Minister for Roads and Freight, Duncan Gay and State Member for Dubbo Troy Grant joined Narromine Mayor Bill McAnally at the heavy vehicle route opening on Wednesday and all agreed the change would be a sensible one.
Cr McAnally said the council was currently working with Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) on moving the highway.
"We're looking at converting the highway to Manildra Street," he said.
"We're working on that, in the process of changing the main street from high vehicle usage. At the moment we're encouraging restricted vehicles to use the bypass."
The new bypass is located on the corner of Manildra Street and Derribong Street and travels past the Narromine Saleyards, Christian School and railway line.
The bypass, partially funded by the NSW Government fixing country roads program, included a one-way bus lane for the school and better access to the saleyards.
"This has safety aspects, second to none," Cr McAnally said.
"The road is a lot safer to get through town. It's absolutely wonderful to get trucks out of the main street area."
Mr Gay praised the council for its dedication to the task and said there would be opportunity for further collaboration in the future.
"We are more than happy to work with you in the future. We love working with you, your staff just get it," he said.
The ministers, council and the RMS are thrilled with the herd of heavy vehicles being moved out of the central business district and onto the new bypass.
"This is future proofing," Mr Gay said.
"The council gets this community, they're proactive."
The council, including Cr McAnally, were eager to open the new project.
"It's a wonderful job, we've had wonderful staff. It's only a little over budget, but these things often are," he said.
