The pair confirmed the wedding had taken by place via social media.
Guess what? @DavidBurtka and I got married over the weekend. In Italy. Yup, we put the 'n' and 'd' in 'husband'. pic.twitter.com/R09ibF41rt — Neil Patrick Harris (@ActuallyNPH) September 8, 2014
"We put the 'n' and 'd' in husband," 41-year-old Harris said via his Twitter account.
The pair were formally engaged when New York legalised gay marriage in 2011, however Harris has said they proposed to one another at least five years before that.
According to reports the wedding was small, attended only by family and close friends.
The pair wore matching custom Tom Ford tuxedos.
The nuptials were officiated by the pair's friend, Pam Fryman, who was a producer/director on How I Met Your Mother, the sitcom in which Harris most recently starred.
According to reports, Elton John performed at the reception.
"We happily confirm that Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka were married in Italy in an intimate ceremony surrounded by their close friends and family," a statement from Harris's management said.
The couple have two children, twins Gideon and Harper, who were born in 2010.
In 2012, Burtka said they were a very "co-dependent" couple.
"He's my lifeline, in an amazing way. Without him, I can't breathe," Burtka said. "The biggest thing is that he makes me laugh."
