The fundraiser is an initiative of local Ashleigh McKeown, who suffers from Spina Bifida, originally organised a small event to raise awareness and funds amongst friends.

"It was very small, I invited some friends and then they wanted to invite friends and it got to 100 people and I thought I'd better make it bigger," she smiled.

A Super Hero Fight for Spina Bifida will take place on Saturday at the USMC starting at 7pm.

"I'm organising this because I want to help make people more aware of Spina Bifida and raise funds for more services to help people like me who live with this disability," Ashleigh said.

The event will have games, auctions, raffles and of course Super Heroes with all funds going to the Spina Bifida Section of Northcott Disability services.

Ashleigh was motivated to organise the fundraiser after a series of shocking encounters with general practitioners.

"Lots of people, even doctors, don't really know what Spina Bifida is or how to properly manage it," she said.

"I've been to three doctors who have all refused to treat me because the bed in their surgery was way too high for me to get on myself and they had no equipment to get me on the bed nor would they lift me out of my chair onto the bed."

Ashleigh is also hoping to raise funds for resources.

"There is such long waiting lists," she exclaimed.

"I need a new cushion and I have to wait 14 weeks. If I wanted a new wheelchair I'd have to wait from 12 months to 18 months."

Ashleigh is a Teacher's Aide at Narromine Public School, and she is hoping the fundraiser will be a good opportunity for people to get a better understanding of what her life is like.

"If I'm out with someone else, people will talk to them first and talk about me like I'm not here," she said.

"I want people to look past the fact I'm in a wheelchair and see me for who I am, which is more than a lot more than a wheelchair.

"A lot of people tell me what I can't do and don't seem to focus on the things I am capable of doing."

The Western Region are encouraged to dig deep for Ashleigh's fund and everyone is invited to Super Hero night tomorrow.
