Even before the night of fun, frivolity and trivia had begun seating was scarce for the 17 teams of trivia combatants.
Rick Bohm (Master quizmaster extraordinaire and all-round nice guy) began the proceedings and asked the teams to bring their answers up for the round one, a picture round of a mixed bag of close-up photos of items and objects of every-day life. These included a peg, a car-toon from a by gone era (that many of us would remember, in fact, the majority of attendees would remember), a tennis ball, and confounding some, a cigar.
The Wednesday night euchre club spokesperson, Mal, then presented donations from people who could not attend this fabulous night, for over $200.
This was a great start for the night and aptly appreciated by all and sundry.
With most teams scoring nine and 10 a question was raised, "The Fleabags got 10?".
Will wonders never cease? Could this be their night for glory? Will Bob and Carol and Ted and Alice ever re-unite.... Oooops sorry wrong story.
On to the Baffler questions: I am found in Australia, not much of me anymore, important to the environment selves on me. Spoiler Alert! It's not the Great Barrier Reef, nor any of the following Uluru, dingo, koala, kangaroo, ozone or opals; the correct answer will be revealed at the end.
Round two proved both challenging and risky for some teams who decided to go for the double points action. Raw scores ranged from five to 10, however those shooting for the double points failed to get the perfect score.
The Cats and Dog and Strays (CD&S) team was the only team to get a perfect round but chose not to double it.
Most teams chose round three to double their points and this proved to be a winning move by some but for others, placed them well back in the field.
By the end of round three Something Simple held a slender lead from Winner Winner, Fleabags (remembering they were the ones who scored a perfect round in round one) and the CD&S team. Of the aforementioned teams CD&S were the only team not to score a perfect double round.
The question of what four letter word is the backbone of a ship more commonly known as? proved challenging for them and the answer a bit later on in the article.
Heads or tails was the next event with the eventual winner Brett Paul.
In addition to this the baffler was finally solved by no less than eight teams.
The tie breaker question, “How old are the Logies?”
Teams pondered long and hard with CD&S being the winners by correctly guessing the answer.
Once again a discerning, dubious and doubtful question was asked, “What is the most abundant metal in the human body?”
In the end the overall winners were Something Simple one point ahead of the In Betweeners with the consolation prize going to the Brain Stormers.
Where were the Fleabags I hear you ask? They finished third only one point behind the In Betweeners.
President Kevin Rider, who was ably assisting our quizmaster was called upon to do the presentation to the Narromine Cancer Support group.
He presented spokesperson Jeff with a cheque for $2240 and Jeff congratulated everyone for helping raise such a generous amount. Jeff went on to say “a great job was done by the euchre players and special thanks to Mal and if you know of someone suffering from cancer in Narromine that could use some support please don’t hesitate to contact the group.”
The next charity to be sponsored is St Vincent de Paul and this will be held on October 21.
And now the answers: Baffler - coral, The Great Barrier Reef contains other things; Backbone of a ship-keel; the Logies were 56 years old; Abundant metal in the human body - calcium yes calcium is a metal.
Until next time.
