The first project from the Green Army Team was launched in the Central West yesterday.
CEO of supporting organisation RiverSmart, Dr Bill Phillips, said the Green Army would work to control weeds and revegetate public lands along the Macquarie River between Narromine and Warren.
"(This is) a part of our on-going NatureLinks program which sees volunteers working with 20 private landholders along the same stretch. They will also work on trail extensions and the installation of additional signage at the Tiger Bay Wetlands in Warren," he said.
The team is a part of the program Prime Minister Tony Abbott and Minister for Environment Greg Hunt launched in August.
Dr Phillips said the program was hands-on, practical and grassroots environmental which supported local environmental and heritage conservation projects across Australia.
He invites community members to be part of a team.
Each of the Green Army teams comprises 10 people, a team leader and nine others.
"Team members have to be between 17 and 24 years-old to participate and sign up," Dr Phillips said.
Under the guidance of a Conservation Volunteers Australia Supervisor, team members will gain the skills they need to undertake the project-specific accredited training that will help participants enter the workforce or improve their career opportunities, Dr Phillips said.
Federal Member for Parkes, Mark Coulton, is a supporter of the project.
"This Green Army project will allow young people in the region to gain skills to set them up for future employment," he said.
"RiverSmart has been an organisation that has had the support of the communities in the Macquarie Valley and this project provides an opportunity for further environmental works.
"I urge anyone interested in the Green Army project to make contact to take advantage of this exciting opportunity."
