Wellington council general manager Michael Tolhurst says there are some challenging options ahead to get the local government area 'fit for the future' but a series of community consultations beginning tonight will explain the way forward.

"We'll go through the process and explain why and talk about what we have to do before a submission is made to the local government reform body," Mr Tolhurst said.
The NSW government is reforming Local Government with the aim of ensuring councils have the scale and capacity to be sustainable in the long term.
The Wellington Council says it will prepare a submission for the Office of Local Government by June 30, 2015 that outlines the steps needed to place Wellington Council in a long term sustainable situation.
