ORANGE City has come away from Cale Oval with a bonus-point, 26-0 victory over Narromine.
In a game that never reached any great heights, the Lions scored twice through winger Taylor Smith before Duncan Young and Jake Davis also crossed the stripe to see Orange City come away from its round six clash with the Gorillas with maximum points.
Fullback Sam Coote shone, while skipper Josh Maley led from the back of the scrum as the Lions secured their fifth win of the season to shore-up a place in the Blowes Clothing Cup’s top three, alongside fellow heavyweights and last-start winners Emus and Bathurst Bulldogs.
Lions co-coach Steve Hamson said the match lacked a touch of continuity, but with Orange City scrambling well on a number of occasions to resist a throng of Gorillas attacking raids, defence was undoubtedly the highlight.
“We spoke about it at halftime too,” Hamson said.
“We’re pretty happy to have kept them to zip. It was probably the highlight; we scrambled four or five times there really well.”
Hamson said there was still plenty of work to be done as the Lions battle for a spot on top of the 2015 ladder, and his side’s attack is one area he’d like rectified quickly.
“We were probably guilty of pushing the pass there on a few occasions,” he said.
“We played reasonably well without being outstanding.
“We scored a couple of good team tries there during the game, Sam Coote was particularly good in those, but there was a lot of turnover ball throughout the game.”
The shut-out win moves into second on the 2015 ladder, ahead of Emuson for and against, but with tough games against the Greens and competition leaders Bathurst still to come, Hamson added his side must improve.
