Tournament of Minds (TOM) is a problem-solving program for teams of students. It is an opportunity for students with a passion for learning and problem solving to demonstrate their skills and talents in an exciting, vibrant and public way.
The tournament has been one of the fastest growing national inter-school programs to challenge the youth of Australia and is now expanding internationally.
TOM's aim is to enhance the potential of our youth by developing diverse skills, enterprise, time management and the discipline to work collaboratively within a challenging and competitive environment.
Mr Gibbons and Mrs Burns took Sarah Halbisch, Zoe Gainsford, Paddy Burns, Tait Gibbons, Jae-Lee Edwards, Lincoln White and Michael Kent to The Tournament of Minds in Bathurst.
It was the first time St Augustine's had participated in this event.
The team completed both challenges as a co-operative team demonstrating outstanding teamwork skills with positive attitudes towards each other and the challenge.
The St Augustine's team took on a six-week mathematics/engineering challenge that asked them to design and make an almost invisible vehicle that navigates a given course carrying a 250ml water bottle.
The students needed to present their vehicle in a time and place of their choice.
The students also needed to complete a spontaneous challenge which they had to complete in a given restricted time frame.
The students were assessed on their team work skills and their creativity.
The team completed both challenges as a co-operative team demonstrating outstanding teamwork skills with positive attitudes towards each other and the challenge.
Even though their vehicle did not work the way they initially planned the team persevered and their positive attitude when faced with unforeseen challenges was appreciated by the judges.
The St Augustine's team won the Spirit of the Tournament Perpetual Trophy.
