This is first time the Junior World Gliding Championships have been held in Australia or the Southern Hemisphere.
The opening ceremony at Payten Park saw all the teams walking around the oval where they were introduced and congratulated for their qualification.
Competitors and their teams hailed from all over the world including Denmark, Lithuania, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Canada and the USA.
Both Mayor Bill McAnally and Deputy Premier Troy Grant welcomed the overseas visitors.
"You are all a part of a wonderful experience with the opportunity to compete with other nations, but you're doing it for the first time in the Southern Hemisphere," Mr Grant said.
"We are all very hospitable here in Australia but you will find no better people than the people of the Narromine region."
Cr McAnally also welcomed the international visitors.
"Thank you for travelling to probably the best part of Australia. Once you're up there in the air, you'll notice you're flying over the best part of Australia," he said.

"I know it's a competition but I hope you (see) this is a friendly town. I hope you take away wonderful and beautiful memories of what you can experience out here."
Cr McAnally thanked Beryl Hartley and the members of the Narromine Gliding Club.
"Without Beryl we wouldn't have what we have here today. Beryl has been working on this for numerous years. I think I've been mayor for five years and it's been on the table all the time. I always had faith that Beryl could get this to happen and without her and the wonderful people out there, this wouldn't have happened," he said.
"It's also great to see so many people here, great to see the support of the town and shire and I hope everyone gets out (to the aerodrome) for a look around."
Mr Grant wished all the competitors good luck.
"Go forward, glide well and compete hard but be safe. We hope every success comes your way," he said.
