The Lions Bus is well known around town for providing transportation for people who want to indulge in alcoholic beverages on a night out, to prevent drink driving.

Member for Parkes Mark Coulton was thrilled to give money to such a worthy cause.

Lions member, Mark Dugan said the bus had been an excellent addition to the town.

"It's been a great earner (fundraiser) for us, we can drive the drinkers around town. The RSL has a good bus up there but they have to sell it. We didn't want them to sell it out of town as then there would be no bus available with wheelchair access and our bus is due for an upgrade so we want to buy it," he said.

Mr Coulton believes it's a great use of resources and is delighted to support a local not-for-profit group.

"For a long time I felt there was a need for greater support for incorporated not-for-profit organisations to help maintain small infrastructure projects that would benefit our local communities. Out here in Western NSW quality infrastructure can make or break a community. Our local volunteer organisations are pivotal to our community's identities."

Mr Coulton donated the money from the Commonwealth government funding for small capital projects.

Trangie Lions member Andy Baldwin believes the drink driving rates have gone down since the Lions Bus was introduced into the Trangie community.

"Anecdotally I haven't heard of anyone who has been done (DUI) since we got the bus up and running. It has taken little groups on excursion, it's great because you don't need a bus licence to drive it, so teachers can take it," he said.

Mr Dugan said the Lions had sold spots on the renowned bus.

"Individual sponsors have put money into the bus and they get their names on there," he said.

Mr Coulton was very interested in this initiative and was thinking about sponsoring a spot himself on the next bus.
