In our Rotary District, a thin strip in NSW from Newcastle to Bourke, 1912 kits were sold in 2015 (2583 in 2014) with 74.3 per cent of kits returned for analysis (50.17 per cent in 2014). Of the kits returned and analysed, 17 or 1.2 per cent (21 in 2014 or 1.16 per cent) were positive and four cases of bowel cancer were discovered.
The percentage of positives is roughly 64/36 per cent to males. Over the past 13 years our district has sold 64,087 kits and 38,457 were returned for analysis or 60.07 per cent.
If you are over 40, you, your spouse or partner, other family members and friends in this age group should participate in the Bowelscan program.
Do you know?
- Cancer of the large bowel is the most common internal cancer affecting Australians.
- The lifetime risk in developing cancer is one in 19 in Australian men and one in 27 for Australian women.
- Ninety per cent of bowel cancers can be cured if detected early.
- Australia has one of the highest incidences of colorectal cancer in the world.
- Each year about 11,000 new cases of colorectal cancer are detected resulting in about 5500 deaths.
- The incidence of bowel cancer has not fallen over the past 20 years.
- The chance of contracting bowel cancer increases progressively from age 40.
- Deaths from bowel cancer each year are double the road toll.
Many people with bowel cancer do not have any signs.
The Bowelscan kit is available from the Narromine and Trangie Pharmacies and you follow the simple instructions.
You need to take a sample of your bowel motion and place it on the sachet. Send the sample in the self-addressed envelope to a laboratory for analysis.
You will be advised of the analysis result. The cost of the kit is $15, not a donation to Rotary but an investment in your life.
Do yourself and your family a favour. Spend $15 on a kit, follow the instructions and get the sample analysed. In more than 99 per cent of cases it is called "peace of mind".
The family of a Narromine farmer wished he had taken part in the program earlier because when his sample was returned positive, he contacted his specialist who diagnosed the cancer had spread too far.
Early detection is the secret to saving lives.
This man was a healthy, active worker and he had no idea that something was working against the longevity of his life.
Don't think for a second that because you have no pain, no visual signs of something astray that you are immune to bowel cancer.
The Rotary Club of Narromine is very grateful to the proprietors of Narromine and Trangie Pharmacies for their continued support of this program. Special thanks to Narromine Shire Council for permitting a flyer insert with the third rate notice installment. Bowelscan is a Rotary Community Awareness Program.
