Some believe Christians are against fun. No booze, no flirting, no having a bit of a flutter on the track etc. People overlook the fact that the founder of the faith himself was notorious for hanging out with such people who did these things (Matthew 9:11, Mark 2:16, Luke 7:34). From the perspective of Christianity there are many things that don’t contribute to the flourishing of society, the Bible does teach that God allows us the freedom to make our own choices, good or evil (Genesis 2:17).

While it’s an error to conclude that Bible believers are against “fun”, there are some who still assume that the decision of the NSW Premier to ban greyhound racing is tied in to his faith. Those who do will however have to reconcile that with the fact that his deputy (the Minister for Racing no less) also supports the ban.
Clergy probably aren’t the most well informed about the racing industry, so we probably should be silent. Still, it seems remarkable that many who object to the ban don’t actually address the concerns raised in the Special Commission of Inquiry into the Greyhound Racing.
This is the report the state is using to qualify its position. For fans of greyhound racing in NSW, perhaps it would be more effective to actually engage with some of the claims raised in the inquiry.
Those who have attempted theological education will no doubt be familiar with the exhortation to “engage with the primary text” (also known as the Bible).
This is important because many people say many things about Christianity. Sometimes it is easy to forget that what people believe of the faith can be different to what the Scriptures actually teach.
