It’s tough being a pollie. We should keep this in mind as we think about the upcoming council elections. Even as we welcome in new leaders, let us be grateful for all the hard work and sacrifices that have been made by the outgoing councillors. There can be quite a bit that goes on behind the scenes that we do not see.

Being a leader can mean a fair bit of time in the spotlight. This week we were reminded government ministers need to be vigilant at all times. After several took an early mark, the opposition swooped in, almost forcing the establishment of a banking industry royal commission. Malcolm Turnbull had to have words with his party about the importance of discipline and not leaving the house until all business was well and truly over.
For followers of Jesus, we too are reminded to be always vigilant. Jesus told the story of a man who goes for a journey leaving his business affairs to his servants (Luke 12:42-48). They don’t know when he will come back but have to be ready at all times. Jesus reminds us it will go ill for the servant who is not vigilant and who slacks off while waiting for the master’s return.
But what should we be vigilant for? What does the Bible mean? We know God looks at the heart (1 Samuel 16:7). Proverbs 4:23-27 reminds us to “guard our heart” which is the source of all our actions. Jesus himself declared “…out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. These are what defile a person” (Matthew 15:19-20 NIV).
What should be guiding us through each day? Disciples of Jesus should be known for their fruit: Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness and self control (Galatians 5:22-23). How are we doing in these areas this week?
