BOWLS
Whilst the weekend wasn’t that hectic, due to Mother Nature putting a halt to our planned NAIDOC Day, there was plenty of action during the week and more to come.
Firstly on the social bowls side of things some 18 players enjoyed the pleasant conditions on Thursday, which went something like this. On Rink 3 Terry McDonald, Clifton Harris & Adam Morrissey had an afternoon out giving Kerry Martin, Noel Delboux & Peter Cross the short back & Sides along the way to an emphatic 39/11 win. On rink 04 Murray Woolfe, Peter Bob Davis & Don Sullivan also had a comfortable win 27/14 over Don Gibson, Peter Kelly & Des Lincoln, and just to round out the day Tom Newlands, Bob Hetherington & Jeff Schloeffel joined in to record a solid 21/10 win over Ron McCarney, David McNair & Terry Fahey. Presentation time saw Terry, Clifton & Adam get the lion’s share of the loot, whilst Murray, Bob & Don earned a nice refreshment for their good win also. The jackpot prize pool of $156 was not won and so this Thursday will edge just that closer to the double century range.
Sunday social bowls saw David McNair, Jimmy Daley & Danny Carnevale atop the Podium, whilst Legs Hartas & Budd Cape managed to garner the runners-up cheque. Again the Jackpot prize pool was expanded a few more notches, having failed to come up with the right number at presentation time.
Whilst there were no championship matches scheduled for the weekend Bruce Maher & Ben Clark, by mutual agreement managed to fit in their consistency singles game and this time around it was Ben who advanced to the next round of this event, which co-incidentally has some 5 Matches programmed for this coming Saturday afternoon at 1.30pm. In game 1 Don Sullivan will play Mick Wright, Game 2 features Peter Cross & “Rabz” Macqueen, Game 3 sees Danny Carnevale take on Robbie Stanford, Game 4 will see Alex Sambrook & Jeff Schloeffel clash & last but certainly not least Game 5 sees Arnold Gillespie & Geoff Bohm do Battle.
Also this coming Saturday, Narromine Bowling Club will play host to the sectional play in the Zone Rookies pairs event. Some 6 teams from throughout the region will converge on Narromine bright and early Saturday morning, with Trent Jacobson & Ben Clark, along with Aaron Clark & Sam Crook carry the hopes of the locals. Should be a terrific days bowls, hope to see a big crowd of Narromine members up at the club to support our boys.
The time honoured “FINO” Day is only a couple of weeks away (Saturday 24th September) and with green space limited to 12 teams, your nomination had better be sooner rather than later to avoid missing out on what is one of our favourite days in the calendar.
The ladies had a big week last week and looking at their calendar it will be more of the same this week. Last Tuesday some 104 Lady bowlers from throughout the region received their Veterans badge, including 15 of our girls, well done. This week sees the final of the club Triples featuring Mavis Leak, Janet Coote & Jan Buswell up against Helen Woolfe, Betty Purvis & Heather McIntyre in what promises to be an interesting tussle. Also on the program this week is the “Taber” Shield in Dubbo at which we have a few Narromine Ladies playing and we wish them well in this prestigious event.
Just a reminder that our Annual General Meeting has been scheduled for Sunday September 25, and nominations for the board of management of the Narromine Bowling Club Limited are now being called for.
Well that’s it for me for another week, looking forward to the Bowls Forum at Dubbo City on Friday Morning with guest speakers & a bowls demonstration from Steve Glasson, Kelvin Kerkow & Karen Murphy. It certainly should be enlightening if nothing else.
