The Manning family – Jamie, Karen and their three children – are riding horses from Tilpa to Dubbo to raise awareness and vital funds for the charity Limbs4Life, which provides information and peer support to amputees.
It’s a cause close to Jamie’s heart: in 2014 a car accident claimed his left arm and leg, and caused burns to 40 per cent of his body.
“I was trapped in the car and I was lucky to survive. They had to amputate to save my life,” he said.
“It’s been a long journey learning to ride...but I worked with horses all my life so I made it a goal.”
The ride began at Tilpa on September 17, with the family riding about 20 to 25 kilometres each day.
They reached Narromine at the weekend and Jamie said the response they received was been remarkable.
“We’ve been welcomed with open arms,” he said.
“Once you start to do something good all the good people come out of the woodwork.”
“It’s humbling...it’s a credit to them how generous they are and friendly, always wanting to stop and have a yarn.”
