This now sees this event out to the finals status, which will be played next Saturday at 1.30pm and will feature Brian, “Hodgo” & Geoff, go into battle with Tom Newlands, Trent Jacobson & Alex Sambrook.

Great to see Brian & Tom in particular through to the final, it augers well for the future of bowls at Narromine to have these new bowlers, enjoying a modicum of success so early in their careers.

Also up next Saturday will be the Final of our A-grade Triples event, in which Riley Cape, James Daley (Sub) for Dad & Robbie Stanford pit their skills against  Aaron Clark, Sam Crook, & Peter Cross in what promises to be an intriguing Clash.

The Consistency Singles have almost reached the pointy end of the contest, and to that end we have added a quarterfinal match to Saturday’s afternoon of championship events. In a deferred game Ben Clark will play Mick Wright, with the winner advancing to the semi-finals the following week, where it is envisaged that we will play both semi-finals Saturday, and if winners agreeable the final on Sunday. This will finalise the Men’s championships for 2016 and allow us to programme a few SUPA Saturday’s over the course of the summer.

SUPA SATURDAY: With that in mind our first outing will be Saturday 6th November. Just a reminder that this event is open to any and all interested bowlers, men & women.

Full details of the day, including costs times conditions of play etc can be found on the flyer on the notice board, but with numbers limited to 56 players, I suggest sooner rather than latter, should be your trip to the notice board to avoid missing out on what is always an interesting event, and with a few little extra incentives added to this year’s calendar more the reason to have a go.  

SOCIAL BOWLS: The fields for social bowls are slowly but surely on the improve, with 18 going around both Thursday and Sunday morning and it especially “nice” to see a few more ladies having a run on Sunday, keep on coming along ladies.

Now here is what happened on Thursday out on rink 4: Don Gibson, David Price & Kevin Rider defeated Peter Kelly, Bob Davis & Aaron Clark, with Kevie, somewhat surprisingly happy with the win over the Rookie.

On Rink 5: Robert Bateman, John Heterick & Don Sullivan had too many answers for their opponents Noel Delboux, Bob Ashdown and Peter Cross winning 18/07.

Interest scorecard though, with Cranky & Co winning 7 ends of the 18 played but only singles scored on each winning end, must have been hard to get a shot indeed. On Rink 06 David McNair & Clifton Harris certainly made life easy for skipper Steve Buttsworth as they carved out a telling 24/09 win over Des Lincoln, Mal Dawes & Danny Carnevale, and in doing so got the winners cheque for the day’s best score.

The trio of Don, David & Kevie were awarded the refreshments prize, whilst Sully & co had to be content with just another win added to their bowls CV.

Sunday morning’s Chook Run saw three games of triples contested in warm, but windy conditions, which made for some interesting bowls.

On rink 3 Gordon McIntyre, Geoff Bohm & Arnold Gillespie jumped out of the blocks to lead Barb Lincoln, Bill Wilkie & Danny Carnevale 13/03 after just 5 ends, and despite dropping a couple of telling “multi’s” on the way home they managed to hang on and win 19/15.  

On Rink 4 Peter Kelly, Robert Bateman & Steve Buttsworth defeated Des Lincoln, Heather McIntyre & Peter Cross 19/10, while in the final Triples confrontation Betty Purvis, David Price & Aaron Clark got off to flyer against David McNair, Clifton Harris & Kevin Short, which proved the difference in the match, for despite the vanquished winning the back half of the game 12/08 the telling start was the difference in the end with Betty, David & Aaron winning 20/12, with their 14 points scored just enough to edge out “Buttsy” & co for the lion’s share of the loot on offer.

THE LADIES: Some 5 consistency singles matches were played last Tuesday which resulted in wins for Heather McIntyre 152 over Janet Coote 128, Carol Carnevale 150 defeated Thelma Clark 115, Pat Young had a good win 151 over Felicity Powell 139, Pam Roberts used those “special bowls” and her experience to get the nod 150/102 over Caroline Egan, whilst Rosalie Woods had a day out against Bev Shields winning very comfortably. With the Ladies requiring Markers for their Consistency Singles Matches, there were a couple of first round encounters that had to be delayed till this week, and so the makeup and the round 2 clashes won’t be known till later this week, but hopefully a full report on the delayed first round matches and what’s happening further down the track will be in next week’s column. We also had three of our ladies travel to Peak Hill for their President’s day last week, the ladies namely Mavis Leak, Barb Lincoln & Heather McIntyre didn’t bring any of the spoils on offer home, but speaking to a couple of them during Sunday morning’s chook run they advised me they had an enjoyable day, which is what it is all about anyway isn’t it?

DOUBLES FOR BERRYMAN AND KING

A feature of last weeks Gerries golf was the remarkable double achieved by Tiger Berryman and Ross King. In the nine hole golf competition the winner was Tiger Berryman with 26 points from Ross King on 24 points. The course is drying out and there was a good deal of run which resulted in the very good scores on the day. Thirteen players participated on the day and the handicapper will have a field day adjusting the handicaps. There was no winner in the nearest the pin competition which now jackpots. Great to see Rusty McKenzie back on the course again.

After the golf presentation it was off to the pool table. In the first match, Terry Willis and Norm Lewis defeated Chris Harding and Gus Smith to advance to the final. Once again there was discussion about the draw and a new rule was discussed and knocked on the head by our rules expert Rusty McKenzie. The final was between Willis and Lewis who qualified to play Berryman and King who received a free ride into the final. Tiger and Ross were able to win without any warm up and completed the double for the day, by taking out the golf and the pool.

A meeting was held and it was decided to again play the Gerries comp on Wednesday this week, so this afternoon we will be hitting off at 2.30pm on the front nine. See you all on the tee.

Shield leads field of 24

Wednesday October 12, a semi-clouded day with a chilled breeze, saw 24 players contest a stroke event with Joyce McCutcheon’s Trophy. Twelve of these qualified players also competed in McLachlan Shield Medal Playoff.

McLachlan Shield winner (the evergreen) Joan Collins 70nett, Runner up Vicki Gainsford 72nett, winning on a count back from Joy Whiteman 72nett. Joyce McCutcheon’s Trophy winner Carole Paddison 70nett winning on a count back from Joan Collins who also won the first opp ball 70nett. A grade ball won by Vicki Gainsford 72nett. Second opp ball won by Robyn Jones 73nett. Gail White won 3rd opp ball, 4th Opp ball went to Betty Berryman 74nett, Jan Brennan won 5th Opp ball 74nett.

Nearest Pin 9th Betty Green, 17th Carole King. Drawn Card won by a very happy Anne Harmer, who had a day with a very recalcitrant golf cart.

Saturday 15th Oct. Coles, Charity, Fundraising, Ambrose event. A very pleasant day starting about 11am with a delicious bar-b-cue lunch. Betty Green did a mammoth job organizing this event with Coles and other business houses sponsoring trophies.

Lady winners were Heather Bootle & Joan Collins, Runner up Wendy Jeffery & Robyn Jones.

Monaghan takes out F-class

Competition was held over 500 yards at the Narromine-Dubbo rifle range on Saturday October 15 and the 10 shooters present had fine conditions with only a slight breeze from the north to contend with. Out of the 10, nine were competing in F-class, including one visiting shooter. Simon Etcell and Dave Forster started well in F-class after each posted a 56/60 while Alan Taylor went one better with a 57/60 to hold the lead at the break. The second stage went to Scott Monaghan, who fired the only “possible” for the day when he hit a perfect 60/60 as well as cleaning up the “pin-hole” to take home the jackpot. Monaghan went on to win the F-class badge with a total score of 114/120. Lionel Morrish won the F-open badge with a score of 96/120 and Rob Rainbow won target rifle after firing a pair of 47s. The weekly handicap trophy went to Rob Rainbow with a total of 100.
