Delegates Janet Mackinnon and Pat Riley attended the Far Western Group Conference at Narromine, where Mrs Jessie Quigley was awarded the Phillip Group Trophy for service to the community. Another success story unravelled at the Group Cultural Day at Hermidale where Maggie Gordon was awarded the Nita Dewhurst Trophy for her poem “My Bush Home.”
For those who cling to the notion that CWA is little more than “tea and scones”, perhaps a visit to the Association’s website will provide a greater understanding of the role it has played. Since its inception in 1922, the CWA as worked towards easing the plight of women and children in remote, rural areas. Almost one hundred years later CWA is still a force to be reckoned with when it comes to the welfare of Australians.
In recent time CWA has donated massive amounts of money to a number of projects. CWA of NSW joined with the national body, to donate a total of $114,500 to be distributed across rural NSW to fund Rural Financial Counselling Services. The Salvation Army received $260,000 to implement an alcohol and drug program in North Western NSW. Research into adolescent health and how it is affected by factors in rural areas received an amount of $15,000. These are just some of the areas in which CWA NSW plays a pivotal role in the campaign to improve conditions for all Australians.
The increasingly ageing membership and associated decline in health impacts on the effective functioning of individual branches. In order to keep the local branch of CWA functioning successfully, it is imperative that existing membership increase along with a willingness to share ideas and participate at executive level. Trangie branch will hold a street stall on October 28. The hours will be from 8.30am until 1pm. The next meeting will be held at 7pm on November 7 instead of the usual 2pm.
