Despite various concerns of late, Australia’s economy is really ok. Yes, there are reports that Australia’s mining boom is over. Or maybe you’ve read how our housing market is vastly overpriced. Turn from your ways and repent, for the Bubble will soon Burst! Considering how much cash will soon be flowing on Melbourne Cup day, those fears are probably exaggerated. One does not have an economic crisis and still have a multitude of people spend hundreds on a horse racing. Apparently Australian’s are the world’s biggest gamblers. A Productivity Commission report from 2010 estimated 70% of the country’s adult population gambled, with each person on average losing $1500 a year. While some people, the thrill of the punt is worth that much, there are quite a few other things we can think of that seem a bit more value for money.
