New Intern Doctors
It is great to see new medical graduates come to Dubbo to undertake a year long intership in 2017. NSW funds more medical intern positions than any other state or territory. In 2017, 992 interns will start at hospitals around the state - up from 983 in 2016. This record number of intern doctors represents a funding commitment by the NSW Government of $107 million. The 2017 cohort of interns also includes 12 Aboriginal medical graduates. NSW guarantees intern positions to all domestic medical graduates of NSW universities. As well, NSW provides internships to many graduates from interstate universities and, where possible, international full-fee paying medical graduates. NSW is the only state to offer two-year employment contracts to graduates. This includes the one-year internship followed by a year which focusses on consolidating professional practice and experience in different clinical settings. During their one-year internship, the graduates will complete compulsory terms in the specialties of medicine, surgery and emergency. I welcome them to Dubbo and wish them well.

Jillian Skinner’s retirement
Late last week I issued a media statement concerning the retirement from Parliament of NSW Health Minister Jillian Skinner.
Jillian’s contribution to communities across the Dubbo electorate and regional NSW has been nothing short of outstanding. Over half a billion dollars has been invested into hospital and health projects in the Dubbo electorate alone.
She has overseen significant improvements in health services, technology, medical research and innovative integrated care practices, some of these proudly emanating from our own backyard in the Western NSW Local Health District. In my opinion she has been the best health minister in the state’s history and I thank her for her support of our communities.
Aboriginal Art Projects
Local aboriginal artists and arts organisations are now invited to apply for NSW Government funding to support local projects. The NSW Aboriginal Regional Arts Fund is for projects in remote and regional NSW that encourage Aboriginal people to explore and express their cultural identities.
I encourage all Aboriginal artists and arts organisations to apply for this funding which will allow them to share their stories and skills with their communities.
This is well targeted support to build the skills, capacity and professional development of Aboriginal artists and arts organisations as well as create a diversity of stories and contemporary artworks which speak to local communities. Applications close February 27. More information: www.arts.nsw.gov.au
