Club’s fours final yet to be decided
Well what lovely weather we had this week, and once again it certainly influenced the number of Bowls events and the field sizes we had going around.
Unfortunately in the championships side of things Our Club Fours Final had a day on the sidelines, with the players involved in this event having to play in a district event which took precedence.
The Narromine quartet of Ben Clark, Aaron Clark, John Edwards and Robbie Stanford had a tough morning out at Dubbo Railway in the Semi-finals of the Zone Fours Championships.
The boys ran into a red hot Gulgong Team who played some outstanding bowls to easily account for our troops 33/12, although in fairness with the scoreboard reading 8/9 after 10 ends, most of the pundits would have thought this match would go down to the wire, but alas for our boys just 6 ends later it was 10/29 and game over.
So whilst there was no joy for Narromine last weekend, perhaps this coming weekend might see a change of Luck for our teams competing in the District Triples at Dubbo City.
Social bowls this week saw just 10 hardy chaps take to the green on Thursday, with the following results.
On rink 4 Adam Jermyn and Aaron Hutchison enjoyed a comfortable win 22/13 over Danny Carnevale and Aaron Clark, whilst in the triples encounter it was David McNair, Clifton Harris and Terry McDonald who recorded a solid 28/11 win over Noel Delboux, Trent Jacobson and Peter Cross.
The jackpot prize also on offer went to the day’s winners making it a nice double for Adam and Aaron.
We hosted a pennant trial against Tottenham on Sunday Morning, which despite the extreme weather warning was played in not too bad conditions.
The grade 3 Pennant trail against West Dubbo didn’t go ahead as planned, so these lads had a bit of a hit out against each other, and looking at the scorecard and the match itself both teams certainly derived some benefit out of the mornings game.
Our Grade 6 squad certainly got something out of their encounter, with the three new-look teams getting to know each other’s preferences and strengths.
For the record each of our rinks won their match, with Peter Cross and Teammates Bruce Maher, Steve Buttsworth and Danny Carnevale providing a very impressive display along the way to a 24/09 result.
It is hoped that an in house Pennant trial can be held on Sunday February 26, and a sheet to that effect will go up on the notice board this week.
Nominations for the Clubs B-grade Pairs are now being called for with play to commence Saturday February 26.
Hopefully we will be able to complete this event before the local Rugby League season kicks off, which should help nominations for this event from our bowlers who are also involved in the “footy” season.
This coming Saturday we will be having live music in the Clubhouse with Katts Karaoke entertaining our members and guests, so why not come along and enjoy a night out up at the bowly.
Tuesday February 21 sees our first trivia night of the year jump into action, and hopefully a good crowd will ensure Local Charity Mudjigalang Ladies receive a “Goodly” amount of Cash to help them continue their good work.
Well that’s about all I have this week, until next week keep em rolling.
GOLF
GERRIES GOLF
By Norman Lewis
Good field in heatwave conditions
Some 22 players arrived for the weekly Gerries Competition played at Royal Narromine in extreme heat conditions last Saturday.
The Ladies comp attracted only six players on the front nine.
The winner was Sue Richardson with 22 points, a great round Sue under the conditions. Runner up was Ann Harmer with 20 points.
There was no winner in the NTP for the ladies and insufficient players for the ladies NAGA award.
There were 16 men in this division and competition in the event was very keen despite the hot weather. There were four players tied on 25 points and the count back was needed to decide the winner which was new member Russel Hunt on 25 points.
Russ comes to us from Walgett and will prove difficult to overcome in future events.
Runner-up was Bob Fletcher who took second place in front of Brian Masling and Norm Lewis, who were the lucky ones and did not lose shots off their handicap. Maso won two golf balls for victory in the NTP competition while Gus Smith won the NAGA prize with 17 points.
After the presentations, attention was on the Pool table where Terry Willis and Charlie Burrowes took on Chris Harding and Mal McIntyre in the preliminary game with Charlie on fire. Burrowes and Willis advanced to the final ith a convincing win.
In the other match Ross King and Gus Smith defeated Bob Fletcher and Mal Richardson. It was a pretty interesting match with much frivolity and barracking from the "peanut gallery'.
The champions for the week were Burrowes and Willis
who answered the critics with a fine win.
An interesting sidelight to the day - "Who was the player who had two air swings on the day, one on the golf course and one on the pool table?" Answer next week maybe.
Next Saturday, the Gerries competition will be played with the girls on the back nine and the blokes on the front with the hit off at 9.00 am. See you all on the tee and lets hope it is a little cooler.
RUGBY LEAGUE
GROUP 11
Focus on the strength of competition
A state league featuring the likes of Dubbo, Orange, Bathurst, Wagga and Tamworth was just one of the many proposals discussed at Sunday’s Western Rams Rugby League boundary review meeting.
Identities from almost all the region’s competitions attended the meeting at Wellington, designed to discuss any possible competition structure changes in the future.
An outside consultancy agency also attended the event to gather the ideas and put them together in a report.
That report, expected to be done in the next six to eight weeks, will then be put back to the regional committee for further discussion and feedback. Group 11 was the most well represented competition at the meeting while there was also representatives from Group 10 seniors and juniors, the Castlereagh League, Group 14, Lachlan and District Junior League, the Midwest Rugby League and the Woodbridge Cup.
Country Rugby League regional manager Western Peter Clarke said there was a “good attendance” and “good discussion” but said any comment on outcomes would be pure speculation at this early stage.
Dubbo CYMS chairman Kevin Walkom said a state league featuring country NSW’s biggest regions was mentioned, as was the idea of a western league featuring the likes “Lithgow, Orange, Bathurst and Dubbo”.
CYMS kicked off the debate over competition structure last year when applying to move to Group 10, a move which was later denied.
“These meetings are a sign of the right direction. It’s a positive step,” Walkom said, before speaking about the state league idea.
“It’s a concept we could possibly grow into but the first step is looking at our current competitions and the competitiveness of the current competitions.”
