Firstly to all my avid readers (well I know I’ve got two) my apologies for no columns the past couple of weeks, they are in cyberspace somewhere, just failed to find their destination, nevermind. We will try to catch up, firstly to the what’s happened. A big congratulations are in order for our Grade 6 Pennant Squad, who courtesy of an outstanding win over Bourke in the final round. They move on to the Zone playoffs in Dubbo on the last weekend in May and we wish them continued success. If possible & time permits this squad will have a trial hit-out at Dubbo Railway before this match. For the record the squad going forward will be Alex Sambrook, Bruce Maher, Steve Buttsworth, Danny Carnevale, Peter Cross, Jimmy Daley, Phil Harding, Steve Riley, James Daley, Geoff Bohm, Mark Hilder, Arnold Gillespie, & Don Sullivan, with Mr Paul Hilder the designated manager.
The final of the B-grade Pairs which will feature Codey Anning & Partner Ben Clark up against Bob Davis & Geoff Bohm hasn’t been played yet. Hopefully it will be gazetted for play in the next week or so, dependent upon district events & or green space.Speaking of green space that is the main issue in what’s coming up. Due to both Dubbo Railway & West Dubbo being unable to host any of the upcoming District Singles & Pairs Championships, Narromine Bowling Club has been allocated the Senior Singles & Presidents Pairs events.
This coming Saturday April 22 will see the Senior Singles kick off at 9am, markers are needed, please put your name down on the nomination sheet which is attached to the noticeboard.
Narromine Bowling Club has a number of entries in both the singles and pairs and I encourage members to wander down and have a “gander” at some stage of the weekend, it really should be first-class bowls. For the record Narromine players in action this weekend in the various formats of the Singles Championships include Robbie Stanford, Ben Clark, Aaron Clark, Rabz Macqueen, Robert French, Danny Carnevale & Don Sullivan.
The draw for the A-grade pairs was conducted under the watchful eye of Paul Hilder (independent body) on Sunday evening and will kick off where possible this Saturday. Again with the district singles requiring most of the green space available and a number of Narromine players taking part in the District Singles there won’t be too many games we can put on. We can play a couple, and so Saturday April 22 at 1.30pm will see Match 1. Budd Cape & George Orcher take on Mark Hilder & Alex Sambrook, while Match 2 will feature Geoff Anderson & Phil Harding tackling Joey Mikulic & Riley Cape.
Social bowls this past week saw our fields bolstered by a visitation from the Glenbrook Bowling Club. The boys and girls were booked into the Tourist Caravan Park, where host Terry McDonald took them under his wing and ensured their stay in Narromine was most enjoyable. Sunday Morning we had some 30 starters and yours truly even got a short run (still getting ‘em closer than Frenchy), until I had to duck away and help “management” AKA mum make the sandwiches that we provided for a light lunch after the game. Suffice to say bowls was the winner but for the record the day’s winners were Pat Harvey, Geoff Anderson & Robert Jacka, with Glennis Murphy, Garry Harvey & “Bulldog” AKA Jeff Irvin the worthy runners-ups. Haven’t got the results from Thursday’s social bowls, but I know we had a few starters and the Triples team skippered by Danny Carnevale got the Easter chocolates.
The Easter tournament at Trangie has thrown up some great results for the Narromine boys playing in this event, including the winners, Namely Kerry Martin, Phil Harding, & Peter Cross, well done lads.

GERRIES GOLF
BRILLIANT WIN TO RICHARDSON
Last Wednesday some 14 players turned up for the weekly Gerries Golf competition at Royal Narromine. Feature of the afternoon was the brilliant round played by Bob Richardson who returned a card of 26 stableford points on the front nine.
Runner up to Richardson was the consistent Malcolm Fraser with 22 points. There was no winner of the NTP competition which now jackpots to next week. Competition was pretty keen for the popular NAGA award where three players tied on 15 points. The countback system was used to decide the winner who was Bob Culhane - well done Bob.
Attention was moved to the Pool Table for the weekly competition where the preliminary match saw a runaway win to Terry Willis and Bob Fletcher who defeated Norm Lewis and Gus Smith to advance to the final. In the final they played Chris Harding and Mal Richardson and it must be said that Mal really excelled in this match. They won very convincingly to become the weekly champs.
This afternoon the Gerries will play a stableford competition on the back nine with the hit off at 2.30pm.Those interested are invited to attend for an enjoyable afternoon on the course which is in great condition. See you all on the 10th tee.

RUGBY UNION
NARROMINE GORILLAS
The Gorillas travelled to Wellington to take on the Redbacks in their first appearance of the 2017 season and their first game in the GrainCorp Cup.
A road trip is always hard in round one and there was also the fear of the unknown as the Gorillas had not squared off against the Redbacks since about 2005. Following a successful season for Wellington in 2016 that saw them defeated in a close semi-final, Narromine knew they’d have their work cut out if they were to come home with a win.
The game started at a lively pace with both teams keen to run the ball and test the defences around the ruck, and there were some solid hits that would’ve seen sore bodies come Sunday.
The Gorillas were first to cross through halfback Jono Sharkey who was back in the Gorillas colours for the first time since playing colts back in 2007 before heading off to pursue study and work. The service from Sharkey to his backline was classy all day and his work rate around the paddock was tireless. The conversion was unsuccessful and the score remained 5-0.
Wellington hit back through a penalty goal before two penalties to Henry Buttsworth saw the half-time score at 11-3.
The chat at half-time was about maintaining pressure and executing the game plan in order to wear down the Redbacks who were defending admirably. Fly-half George Hancock was having a wow of a game with some clever passing and bustling running, and he had the Gorillas going forward early in the second stanza.
Another penalty goal to Buttsworth stretched the score to 14-3 and Gorillas were in the box seat. Showing great resilience, the Redbacks were able to split the defence midfield and their flanker crossed under the posts. The conversion was successful and the score was back to 14-10.
The middle period of the second half was marred by handling errors from both teams and three yellow cards (2 for wellington and 1 for Narromine’s Bill Rybak).
However, the Gorillas were able to keep to their structures and show superior fitness and composure when it mattered crossing for tries to Charlie Tuck and Luke Brown to see the final score 26-10.
Other strong performances were from Sam McLeod who was also returning to the club after playing for the colts in 2007, the Warhorse craig Campbell who got through a mountain of work, and Josh Jones who was playing his first run-on senior game for the Gorillas.
The first home game will be at Cale Oval on April 22 vs the Geurie Goats, who also had a win in round one against the Trangie Tigers.
