Castlereagh League
Round 17 of the 2017 Christie and Hood Castlereagh League competition saw the scoreboard attendants around the Group given a heavy work as big scores were the order of the day. Both the Trangie Magpies and the Coonabarabran Unicorns rugby league teams were having their final outing for the year with both teams having a bye next week. They both had road trips to wind up their 2017 commitments and they were on the wrong end of a lop sided score sheet with the Maggies going down 72 to 12 to Coonamble at Coonamble and the Unicorns well beaten by Gulgong at The Gong, going down 78 to six. The biggest score was recorded at Gilgandra with the Panthers downing a gallant, but outgunned Coolah Kangaroos outfit 82 to nil (Official recorded score will be 75 to nil).

The final score did little to reflect the effort that the Roos put in against the competition frontrunners. The visitors would have been well pleased with their first half effort, going to the sheds at 20 to nil down. Things immediately went pear shaped in the second half for the red and whites. In the opening 25 minutes Coolah rather amazingly did not have one touch in possession, their first contact with the ball, just 15 minutes remained in the game! Unfortunately at that point the Panthers had a 76 to nil lead enjoying 100 per cent of the possession in the second stanza up until then. In League Tag the Warren Bulldogs continued their good form, ending any semi final aspirations that Baradine had with a 34 to four win at Warren, Coonabarabran finished their year on a winning note, downing Gulgong 32 to 18. Coonamble took out a high scoring game against Trangie 50 points to 20.
The final round of Christie and Hood Castlereagh League season will be this Saturday with the Baradine Magpies travelling to Gilgandra to face a stern examination against the reigning premiers and currently undefeated competition leaders. The Panthers will be wary of the Maggies, rating the Round 9 clash against the Black and Whites at Baradine one of their toughest encounters so far. In fact Baradine are the only side that has lead the Panthers on the scoreboard at half time in 2017 and if they can replicate their recent form it should be an entertaining Boronia Cup Challenge game. Mathematically Dunedoo can force their way into the semis, but it will take a combination of a big loss by Baradine and a big win by them over the Coonamble Bears at Dunedoo for that to happen. In terms of points difference between The Swans and The Magpies, Baradine currently holds an 80 point advantage. The Swans have proven to be a handy outfit, and at home, and coming off a strong win against Gulgong a fortnight ago they might rate their chances of upsetting the Bears. Preceding the rugby league at Dunedoo will be an interesting league tag fixture with the first placed Swannettes taking on the fourth placed Bearettes. The final four is decided in the league tag but a bold showing by Coonamble against Dunedoo would certainly bolster their confidence going into the semis. Christie and Hood Castlereagh League round 17 scores.
