The walk is raise awareness for lung disease. Mr van Nierop suffers from pulmonary fibrosis, the scarring of lung tissue making it difficult to breath.
He is using the experience to raise awareness around all kinds of lung diseases, and pick up some funds for research as well. As of Tuesday The Long Walk for Lungs had raised over $62,000 for the Lung Foundation Australia.
Mr van Nierop said he’s nervous and excited for the adventure.
“It’s a long way. This time it’s the person with the lung disease doing all the walking,” he said.
“It’s a long way to go, I’m more worried about my body than the lungs.”
