GERRIES GOLF
HARDING OUTPLAYS THE FIELD
Last Wednesday in the Gerries weekly competition played on the back nine, that very popular Chris Harding had a field day top scoring with a fine round of 26 stableford points. One of his playing partners was heard to say," Chris this is the best I have ever seen you play ' and with that he continued to blitz the field. Bob Fletcher, the runner up on 24 points, was unlucky to strike "Pom" at his brilliant best.
Some twelve players participated in the event played in excellent conditions. Malcolm Fraser won the nearest the pin and collected 2 golf balls for his effort. There was no winner for the NAGA prize due to insufficient players .Getting back to the winning playing group, there was much frivolity on the way around with plenty of lost balls, someone actually hit the wrong ball and another player, who will remain nameless, wanted to claim additional points using the ladies handicap index .In all a very interesting afternoon of golf.
The attention moved to the pool table where Bob Fletcher and Tiger Berryman played "Pom" and Mal Richardson in the preliminary round with victory going to Bob and Tiger who advanced to the final .In the final it was initially mentioned that it was a big chance for Lewis to win a game as he had drawn top player Terry Willis in the match. Alas this was not be as Bob and Tiger were to good on the day to become weekly champs.
This afternoon, the Gerries will play their comp on the front nine with the hit off at 2.30pm. See you all on the tee.

Magpies swoop in Castlereagh League
It was a great weekend for the two Christie and Hood Castlereagh League Magpie outfits with both Trangie and Baradine registering wins in round 2 of the competition. Coming off a thumping loss to Gilgandra in round 1 few would have given the Trangie ‘Maggies’ much hope against the Gulgong Terriers, a side that has been the premiers and runner-up over the past two seasons. How wrong they were with the Magpies digging deep in front of their home crowd to register a memorable 22 to 12 win over the visitors.
At the other end of the Group the Baradine Magpies atoned for their first round loss to Gulgong with a solid 42 to 22 victory over the Coolah Kangaroos after going to the sheds at the break as 22 to 10 leaders, the first half be a spirited affair that saw three players (two Coolah, one Baradine) gain some “reflection time”.
Three North West Youth League games preceded the first grade game at Baradine These games saw a win going to Gunnedah over Baradine, whilst Gilgandra downed Tamworth Collegians and North Tamworth proved to be too strong for Gulgong.
A bruising encounter under lights at Coonamble on Friday night opened proceedings for round 2 of the Christie and Hood Castlereagh League competition, with the Bears playing host to their arch rivals, the Gilgandra Panthers.
It was no place for the faint-hearted as the two teams (as per usual) tore into one another with gusto but in the end it was to be the Panthers who came out on top, scoring seven tries to three to take the game 34 to 18. They may, however, pay a big price for the win with a number of their players suffering injuries during the torrid affair.
There will be a general bye for Easter this weekend before round 3 games will be played on Sunday April 23 instead of the normal Saturday games due to the Western Rams representative games, featuring Christie and Hood Castlereagh League teams, being played at Parkes on Saturday April 22.

WESTERN RAMS UNDER-18s
You’d struggle to find a prouder coach than Western mentor Cameron Greenhalgh after his Rams side fought back from the brink and snatched victory from the jaws of defeat in Saturday’s Country Championship decider.
After enduring the heartbreak of entering last year’s decider as morals then promptly getting thumped 44-10 by Bidgee, the Rams rallied in the dying stages of Saturday’s grand final at Cessnock and ultimately sealed the title in extra-time.
Western trailed Newcastle 10-8 at half-time and then 26-20 with nothing remaining on the clock, but as full-time and a six-point loss beckoned the Rams lifted. With the Rebels back-pedalling, Parkes’ Derby Medlyn spotted an opportunity and barged over to cut the deficit to two and give five-eighth Matt Burton a chance to send the game into extra-time. The Dubbo pivot had only kicked at 50 per cent until then, slotting two of four, but made no mistake despite the pressure-cooker circumstances.
Man-of-the-match Luke Gale came alive in overtime. A constant force throughout the Rams’ Country Championship campaign, if anyone was going to stand up and be counted when it mattered most, Gale would’ve been short odds. Early in extra-time, he loomed in support after a line break before busting a couple of tackles and slamming the ball down between the sticks. The try, and resulting conversion from Burton, set off wild Western celebrations. “Luke was a deserved man-of-the-match,” Greenhalgh said.
WESTERN RAMS UNDER-16s
KURT Hancock has experienced plenty of highlights in his coaching career, but winning a Country Championships title with the under 16 Western Rams ranks near the top of his list. The Bathurst mentor watched on from the sidelines at the Cessnock Sportsground on Saturday as his young Rams beat the East Coast Dolphins 32-22 in extra-time.
That the Rams had forced the additional time with a try in the dying seconds made it a result to relish even more. Hancock admitted he had prepared himself for defeat as the clock ticked down and Western was penalised for a forward pass.
"It was funny, I was still really happy with what they had given. They had given absolutely everything against a very good football side. I couldn't ask for anything more. I knew they would be disappointed and I would have to pick up a few emotional 16-year-olds,” he said.
“But we kept our cool and got into extra-time. I said to them before extra-time that what we needed to do was keep attacking, don't look for a field goal, just keep attacking. They did that and kept believing in their own ability.
"It was great to be a part of. I have been a part of a few special ones in my time … but that one on Saturday, that's right up there.”
