Saturday’s 38-all draw with Brisbane City at Orange’s Endeavour Oval left the Eagles relying on Queensland Country beating Perth on Sunday night to maintain their tentative grip on fourth.
After Queensland shot to a 21-0 lead after as many minutes and then led 26-7 at half-time, that result looked a sure thing.
Then the tide turned.
The Eagles could do nothing but watch on helplessly as Perth scored twice in the first 10 minutes of the second half and squared the ledger with a third unanswered try 15 minutes out from full-time.
Perth sharp-shooter Peter Grant then landed the decisive blow, a penalty goal after the full-time whistle.
