Narromine girls meet the Swifts.
Three Narromine teenagers came face-to-face with their idols when the NSW Swifts held a meet and greet at Taronga Western Plains Zoo on Thursday. Makahlia and Kira-Lyn Edwards and Emma Doherty all play for the Narromine Netball Association, and made the trip to Dubbo with their mothers. Natasha Doherty said her girls have been playing netball since under 7s, and have had always had a “soft spot for the Swifts”.

“Makahlia was actually a ball girl for them a few months ago, so just to meet the girls and have that more intimate meet and greet was amazing,” she said.
“I think the girls were a little bit starstruck, a little it in awe. They think so much of the game so having these girls in front of them, passing on their challenges of what it took for them to get to where they are, was so inspiring for the girls.”
Netball fans young and old were on hand to meet the Suncorp Super Netball side at the zoo, with players signing countless autographs and posing for photos. All the Swifts’ biggest names were on hand. Paige Hadley was incredibly popular with the youngsters, as was Abbey McCullough but each and everyone of the Swifts enjoyed the chance to meet juniors who played in their own position. Newly-appointed Swifts coach Briony Akle was delighted by what she saw.
“We are super excited to be in Dubbo. We had a great bus ride and we’re so happy to be here and seeing our Swifts fans who we don’t get to see that often,” Akle said.
“We know we’re bigger than just Sydney and that we have got loads of supporters in rural areas like Orange, Dubbo and surrounds so it was really important for us, going into next season, to connect with the fans who aren’t just in Sydney.”
“It’s really important they meet out fans who are in regional NSW and we’re super happy with it.”
Edwards said meeting the players “breaks down barriers” for junior athletes in the bush.
“We had that conversation with the Swifts’ captain [Abbey McCulloch] – we would like them to make this more of a priority,” she said.
“It’s amazing for them to give these kids the opportunity. A big thanks to the Swifts for coming out.”

Men’s Bowling
Congratulations to our Silver Division Squad who defeated Mudgee last Saturday to advance to the State Finals at Warilla Bowling Club next Month. The squad of Aaron Hutchison, ben Clark, Robert French, Aaron Clark, Sam Crook and Robbie Stanford will know more about their opponents and schedule later in the week, suffice to say it wont be easy, but hopefully another State Title for the boys in the Red Trousers is just round the corner. No doubt Side manager John Edwards will have everything under control, if that’s at all possible with this “mob”.
Unfortunately our Blue Division squad weren’t as successful at Coonabarabran last Saturday albeit not for want of trying. The boys were defeated by the last bowl of the day, a cruel way to bow out of this event, but that’s bowls. On behalf of the Club a big thank you to President Des, Bowls Secretary Troy for their hospitality last Saturday, I know all our boys appreciated the free BBQ luncheon and the excellent co-ordination of the days play. To Dubbo Railway, the day’s victors best of luck in the finals.
Last weekend we saw the first round of the consistency singles scheduled for play and at the conclusion of the weekend the four players moving on are Mick Wright, Robbie Stanford, Bruce Maher & Aaron Clark. With our annual triples tournament taking pride of place this coming weekend these four gentlemen will have to wait till the following weekend to play their respective semi-final matches.
So that leads us nicely into what’s happening this coming weekend: Well to date some 18 triples teams have nominated for our annual tournament and hopefully we will get a few more team nominations early this week, which would be great. With some $3500.00 in prizemoney to play for, I would have thought the possibility of posting the house full sign might have been on the cards, but still given this time of year and the amount of “stuff” happening 20 teams will be great.
Social Bowls this week saw some ten gentlemen go round on Thursday, whilst another dozen or boys and girls took to the green for the Sunday morning chook run: A full wrap of the all the action went something like this: Thursday rink 01: Bob Ashdown, Clifton Harris and Des Lincoln scored some dozen points along the way in defeating Kerry Martin, Bob Davis and David McNair 20/14, whilst in the pairs fixture it was Noel Delboux and Aaron Clark who scored some 14 points and thus claim the top spot when they defeated Rex Williams and Steve Buttsworth 21/10. Sunday morning saw Aaron Clark again in the winner’s circle after he and teammates Colleen Heatrick and Bob Ashdown defeated Bob Davis, Kevin Heatrick and Terry McDonald 17/11. In the other triples confrontation it was Peter Kelly, Clifton Harris & Visitor Tom Mullins who prevailed 14/13 over Robert Bateman, Lionel Ayoub and David McNair.
Heaps to report on with regards Club House action including Music by Maurice this Saturday Night November 18th. Also President Kevie has put together a wonderful Raffle program for December which will see 25 hams to be won on Thursday, December 14. A new Raffle of sorts will be drawn on Saturday 16th December in the shape of XMAS Hampers totalling almost $1000.00 to be won, and last but certainly not least on December 21in conjunction with our normal Raffle some $2000.00 worth of Bonus prizes will be included in the “Kitty”.
The Bowls committee have programmed a presentation afternoon on Sunday, December 17, which will include Mixed Bowls Sunday morning, followed by a $free BBQ Luncheon for all, and then at approximately 2pm we will be acknowledging our 2017 Champions. A Nomination sheet to help with catering purposes has been posted on the Club notice board and all members, wives; Hubby’s Partners & Children are encouraged to “PLONK” your name down for this day. Well that’s it for me for another week, hope to catch up with you up at the “Bowly” sometime during the week.
Racing to Support
In conditions that left nothing to wish for, a large crowd gathered at ‘Karamea’, home of John and Rhonda Richardson, to celebrate the running of this year’s Melbourne Cup and to support two local organisations, with proceeds from the day shared between Cancer Support and Trangie branch of CWA.
The garden was a delight with masses of blooms, beautifully maintained lawns and an abundant supply of trees to provide shade for the seating areas dotted around the lawn. The tranquil setting of this riverside oasis was an ideal spot for ‘al fresco’ dining, and the delicious lunch, prepared by members of CWA and the Cancer Support Group was enjoyed by all.
Winners on the day were Ilma George, whose fascinator was judged best, Pat Riley, who won the lucky door prize and Jenna Denston who won the much coveted Christmas cake, which was made and iced by Jessie Quigley. Cancer Support and CWA would like to extend a very sincere thank you to John and Rhonda who so generously made their home available for this event and also to the ladies who worked tirelessly to provide the wonderful meal.
Gerries Golf
Last Saturday there was an excellent field of 24 golfers for the weekly competition. Play got underway at the usual time of 9am in very pleasant weather conditions however it did warm up during the course of the morning but this did not appear to have any real effect on the scores for the day.
In the Ladies division played on the front nine, there were 13 players. Winner. on the day was Maida O'Mally with a wonderful score of 27 points. Well done Maida. Runner up was Marj Kelly on 25 points while the ladies NTP went to Gail White on the ninth hole.
Eleven men started in the Men' s division with scoring being very competitive and the countback required to decided the winner which was Bob Culhane on 26 points. Runner up was Vince Ferrari also on 26 points. There was no winner in the men's NTP nor was there any winner in the gents or ladies NAGA trophy. In all a very pleasant mornings golf enjoyed by all.
Attention then turned to the Pool table after the golf presentations where only one match was played. This was between Ross King and Mal Richardson against Bob Fletcher and Terry Willis.
As is usual in these highly competitive matches there were charges of disqualification for changing cues mid game which was eventually dismissed and Fletcher and Willis were crowned champions for the week. Next Saturday, the Gerries comp will be played with a 9am hit off, the ladies on the back nine and the men on the front. See you all on the tee.
