Dick and Ruth Carney each received a letter late last year from the National Australia Day Council, notifying them of their nomination.
They were not successful in progressing to the NSW finals, but said they were just proud to have been nominated.
“We were very honoured and I would just like to be able to thank whoever nominated us,” Ruth said.
“It feels so great.”
The Australian of the Year Awards ask members of the public to “tell us who inspires them, contributes to their community and excels at what they do”, the letters from National Australia Day Council chair Danielle Roche OAM read.
“While you have not progressed to the State and Territory finals, you should feel incredibly proud that someone took the time to acknowledge you and to recognise your contributions to our great country.
“I congratulate you for this recognition and thank you for your contribution to our country and the people around you.”
Ruth said “we believe we’re winners anyway, because we live in the best community”.
