Last Wednesday kids tried out a variety of games and challenges, before learning how to code.

Library assistant Belinda Barlow said the activities had been “extremely well-received”.

“We’ve been booked out for every activity,” she said.

“We’re hopefully running more code clubs later in the year and hopefully that will lead to robotics during the year.”

The kids used a program called scratch to create their own animations. Ms Barlow said coding would be a vital skill for the kids in the future.

“With technology the way it’s going, kids will need to know how to code to get a job in the 21^st century,” she said.

Contrary to popular belief, there are actually more girls coding these days than boys, she said.

“The first person to ever code was actually a women in the 18^th century,” Ms Barlow said.

“If they [children] can learn how to write their own games and create them at home, then they’re learning via play.”

Code Club is booked out for the remainder of the school holidays, but any interested children and parents are urged to contact the library to get on the waiting list for future sessions.
