SPORTS RESULTS – FEBRUARY 7
BOWLS
No Joy for the lads in red trousers who competed in the Zone Championships over the weekend but it wasn’t all gloom and doom as there were some good efforts from a few of our teams both days. On Saturday the quartet of Trent Jacobson, Adam Jermyn, Eddie McPhee and Terry McDonald gave the highly credentialed Dubbo Railway quartet of “Ace” Taylor, Daniel Smith, Paul McKenzie and Jono Davis a nice fright.

At one stage they leading 15/04 and even at 19/17 with just a few ends to go, the match was there to be claimed, but alas it wasn’t meant to be as Jono conjured up a couple of telling multi’s to run out the winner 29/19. Sunday morning saw the Narromine team of Steve Buttsworth, Ben Clark, Kevin Rider & Aaron Clark cause somewhat of a boil over with an extra end win over the West Dubbo Team of Lindsay Burden, Ben Sullivan, Anthony Brown and Joshua Andriske.
Unfortunately the boys couldn’t maintain the rage and found the Dubbo Railway team skipped by Tim Wilkinson a bridge too far in the afternoon semi-final going down by about a dozen shots. So that’s what happened in Dubbo, but meanwhile Sam Crook had engineered an ambush attack on the Dunedoo Section, but things didn’t go to plan as the boys went down by 2 shots in their first game, so long drive over, longer on home and no joy, mightn’t have been a good plan Sam.
So that was the championships for last weekend, and this upcoming Saturday we should be able to finalise our first event of the year, with the Club Fours gazetted for play Saturday afternoon. This Final will feature John Edwards and teammates Steve Riley, Jimmy Daley & Mick Wright up against Alex Sambrook, Ben Clark, Sam Crook and Robert French and hopefully if all players are fit & well and available it should be game on.
This coming Sunday, February 11 sees Narromine hosting West Dubbo in our first official Pennant trial for 2018. The selected sides are: The Grade 3 teams are - Team 1: Trent Jacobson, Adam Jermyn, Eddie McPhee and Glenn Miller: Team 2 is Alex Sambrook, Ben Clark, Sam Crook and Robert French. Team 03 is Aaron Clark, Mark Hilder, John Edwards and Aaron Hutchison: The Grade 05 squad is Team 01: Arnold Gillespie, Bruce Maher, Don Sullivan and Terry McDonald: Team 02: Ross Eddens, Danny Carnevale, Steve Buttsworth and Peter Payne: Team 3: Codey Anning, Phil Harding, Peter Cross and Steve Riley:
We also require an extra rink so our reserves Geoff Bohm and Jimmy Daley need a couple of helpers to have a run:
There is room on the Sheet for this day to plonk your name down if you can assist us: Nominations for the consistency singles close very shortly and at this stage we still have plenty of room, if you’re a mind to have a go.
Social Bowls this week saw Cliffy back in action with his “found” old bowls and despite some encouragement from James Coen from the Peanut Gallery he just couldn’t find that old Bowls form, should have stuck to what’s been winning Cliffy, “oh Well” at least you lead the winners of the day in which turned out to be the trio of Des Lincoln, Steve Buttsworth and Aaron Clark: Sunday saw Robert Bateman, Codey Anning and Bill Wilkie atop the podium, whilst Arnie and Danny got something out of the day, claiming the jackpot prize pool:
Narromine will be hosting a couple of big bowls days in the not too distant future starting with the zone triples championships over the weekend of February 17 and 18. We are expecting almost 100 bowlers to grace our greens this weekend, with teams from right throughout the Zone, and the not to be out done we will be hosting the Bourke Bowling Club for a couple of pennant trials the following weekend. Whilst it is officially pennant trials, the Club is happy for any member desirous of having a game against the Bourke boys, to put their name on the Nomination sheet on the Notice Board. The times for the matches are 2.00pm, Saturday February 24 and 10.00am Sunday, February 25. Not all pennant players will be able to commit for both days and we will need 24 players to match their numbers. Where possible pennant teams will be put together if all 4 players “plonk” their name down, but again we are just trying to pay back our friend from Bourke for their support in the past and hopefully the continued camaraderie this visitation will bring.
What’s coming up in the clubhouse? Well we will be having live music in the Clubhouse on Saturday, February 17 and our Trivia Nights are due to kick off the following Tuesday, February 21, so all in all it will be all happening later this month up at the “bowly” I hope to see you there.
GERRIES GOLF
COOLER WEATHER DRAWS A GOOD FIELD
Last Saturday with the advent of cooler weather a field of 23 players turned up for the weekly Gerries competition. In the Ladies division played on the back nine of Royal Narromine, some 10 Ladies faced the starter and the winner was Viv Halbisch with a great score of 21 points. Runner up was Carole King also on 21 points but unfortunately lost on a count back.
There was no NTP winner for the ladies nor was the NAGA prize won. Thirteen blokes turned up for the event looking resplendent in their new club shirts. Winner was the very consistent John Butcher on 24 points. "Butch" has been knocking at the door in recent weeks and deserved a win. Runner-up on a count back was Vince Ferrari who also carded 24 points.
Once again there was no NTP winner in the men's division nor was there a NAGA prize awarded. Following the golf presentations attention moved to the Pool table where Bill Burke and Gus Smith took on Terry Willis and Bob Fletcher. In what turned out to be an interesting match a boil over was avoided when Burke fouled on the black to allow Fletcher and Willis to advance to the final where they met Chris Harding and Ross King.
The final was a real grudge match with plenty of sledging being exchanged. Fletch and Willis became the weekly Champions when they easily accounted for King and Harding who had five balls left on the table at the finish. Somehow the losers took it pretty hard by falsely reporting the result. Next Saturday the girls will play the front nine and while the boys are on the back nine with the hit off at the usual time of 9.00am.See you all in the clubhouse.
