Former Narromine residents for 50 years, Ron and Jean were married on October 11, 1947, just one day after Jean’s 20th birthday.
That’s because when Ron asked Jean’s father for her hand in marriage, he thought she was too young and said they should wait until she was twenty.
“Needless to say, they didn’t wait a day longer than they had to,” granddaughter Karla Broughton said.
The couple now live in separate residences at a Newcastle nursing home, due to Jean’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis.
“Whilst Jean’s short term memory isn’t wonderful, her long term memory and her quick wit are as sharp as a tack! They still enjoy stirring each other up, and keeping each other on their toes,” Karla said. “We … are so in awe of the amazing love that they have for each other.”
