A total of nine Junior Gorillas represented Central West at the Country Championships in the u12, u13, u14, u15 and u16 teams throughout May. Under 12 Harry Irvine (6) and u14 Michael Kent (8) travelled to Armidale on May 12-13 to play in the u12 -14 Country Championships.
Despite the near freezing conditions all the boys had a strong games with the u12 side finishing third and u13 and u14 finishing fourth. Under 13 Hugh Bible was injured during a trail game in Bathurst a few weeks prior to the Championship however despite this travelled to Armidale to support his teams, even though he was unable to play. Harry Irvine has also been successful in gaining selection in Western PSSA side.
NSW Country Championships held in Bathurst on 19 – 20 May 2018 saw u15 representative Tom Masonwells (13) fight hard in the U15’s side with the team finishing a very respectable fourth after coming up against strong competition.
The three u16s players Taine Marchant (5), Jack Bell (9) and Toby Denyer (12) also played some strong competition throughout the weekend with the U16’s Central West team finishing in fourth position despite having to play with fourteen players in the last game of the competition due to injuries.
The performance of the Gorillas players did not go unnoticed by the NSW Country selectors with Jack Bell receiving selection into the u16 Country 40 man squad. Jack’s selection to the NSW Country 40 man squad has continued his success in rugby over the past few months.
The NSW Country selection comes on top of u16s Central West selection, NSW u16s Country Development Tour of Italy as starting No9, and shadow player selection in 2018 Association of Independent Co-Educational Schools (AICES) u16s side.
Junior Gorilla’s Harry Kruger and Carlos Nyklon have also gained selection in the NSW Combined High School Open side, with the championships being held in Dubbo from May 23-25. Not to be out done by the boys, Jennifer Corderoy (8) u15s and Faith Saunders u17s also made their respective Central West side, recently competing in the Country Championships held in Ourimbah on the weekend May 5-6.
Gerries Golf
Weather keeps numbers down: Last Wednesday only a small field attended for the weekly competition. Some said it was reminiscent of the Icebergs weather with a wind chill of -6. Those that did play, eight plus one visitor, enjoyed the afternoon. The winner was Bob Fletcher with 25 points from Bruce Mitchell on 22 points. The NTP went to Terry Willis who collected three Srixon golf ball for his trouble and of course insufficient players for a NAGA trophy.
On to the pool table where Chris Harding and Ross King played Terry Willis and Bob Fletcher. Here it was victory for "Pom" and " HRH" in what is believed to be their first ever win in the weekly championship event.Well done boys. It was great to see some six players traveled to Warren for their tournament on Thursday The next Veteran tournaments are at Coonamble on June 13 and Nyngan on June 29. This afternoon the Gerries will play the front nine with the hit of at 2.30 pm. See you all on the tee.

Ladies Golf
The first three rounds of our Ladies’ Championships have been played with amazing starts from Wendy Jeffery with a massive 63 nett and Maida O’Mally 66 nett. (That’s 91 off the stick for our 90 year old A Grader!) A very cold and windy 2nd round saw generally poorer scores on an also heavier course after a dribble of rain.
Last Saturday saw Dale Harding win the day with a splendid 65 nett as well as the B grade Scratch 93. A grade scratch and Handicap went to Judy Barlow 82 Scr. and 66 nett.
Today will see the final round of Championships in a heavily contested competition. This is an All Day so please bring a plate for shared lunch. The golf season continues to be busy with our Pennants Team intending to show the Warren Team how to play on our home ground this Friday. Three players also travelled to Trangie yesterday for Trangie’s Open tournament. Coming up on the June long weekend will be a Stableford event, mixed draw and a Club Trophy. And on Wednesday 13 will be the Keno NSW Women’s Fourball PAR Championships, teams of 2.

Bowling
Congratulations to Eddie McPhee and Terry McDonald who Annexed our A grade Pairs event last weekend, courtesy of a semi-final win over Ross Edden and Peter Payne, Thursday afternoon and then going on with the “JOB” against Adam Jermyn and Steve Buttsworth in the Final Saturday afternoon. The “CARAVAN KINGS” were certainly one of the favourites for this event, but in Thursday’s semi-final clash, they needed all their skills and a bit of luck as after the first 12 ends they were in a fair bit of trouble trailing 06/15, but they had a team meeting and must have found the right plan because they managed to get back to within three shots with only a couple to play, and then thanks to an “OH-OH” end from Ross and Payney on end 20, suddenly found themselves three in front and one to play. Well despite a few theatrics the last end they managed to hang on and advanced to that Saturday final. Saturday afternoon It was pretty obvious the boys had got their “mojo” back as from end one they didn’t give Adam or Steve a sniff, jumping out to a 10/02 lead after seven ends and then simply consolidating thru the middle ends to lead 19/07 after 14, from which point, they simply shut up shop. The final score of 28/11 after 19 ends shows exactly how they dominated from Go to whoa and it wasn’t as if the opposition didn’t play good, Eddie and Terry were on song. The Boys will now represent the Club in the Champions of Champions event next month.
The semi-finals of the B grade singles were also played on Saturday and again the window tappers certainly got their monies worth, with both matches having some interesting twists and turns before the winners were declared. Game 01 featured Sam Crook up against Dale McCafferty, and despite a game fight back from Dale it was “CROOKY” who prevailed in the end 31/23. The other semi-final between Geoff Bohm and Joey Mikulic was also a “Dogged” affair, with neither lad able to gain the ascendency in the early stages, but after a bit of “Toing and Froing” it was Joey who got the “W” 31/26 to advance to the final. Hopefully this final can be played on Saturday, June 16, but this is also the date for the first round of the A grade pairs championships, which may take precedence.
The A grade Pairs has attracted some 22 names, but with “Noms” closing this Saturday, there is still time to “plonk” your name down. It’s the same story for those wishing to play in the Zone Singles championships. With Venues all around us Narromine Players shouldn’t have trouble finding a suitable Place to play, depending on which division of this event you wish to compete in.
Social Bowls this week saw handy fields both days. On Thursday, Dale led the winners in again, but this time there were no big scores recorded on the card just lots of ends to Geoff Anderson and Kevin Heatrick, whose 15 points was enough to outlast the other two winning rinks and collect the Open Orders for the days best effort. Well done lads.
Sunday Morning saw yours truly and scooter return to the fray, but unfortunately our team ran into a Red Hot Arnie Gillespie, who thwarted our every move, and thus it wasn’t surprising to see Peter Pearce, Arnold Gillespie and Aaron Clark announced as the day’s best performed team at Presentation time. The Boys outlasted Peter Kelly, Robert Bateman and Danny Carnevale, who despite having a bigger margin in their win over Lincoln, Bob and Bill, didn’t win enough ends to topple the days winners.
Well that’s it for me, to all those Narromine Lads playing in various tournaments over the Long weekend, best of luck.
