The committee held a barbecue on Friday to thank participants from last year’s event and mark 100 days until the Relay for Life.
Committee member Mel Heldon said the barbecue was a way of acknowledging the effort teams made for the Cancer Council.
More than $48,000 was raised for the Cancer Council last year.
“We as a committee put in lots and lots of hours and lots of hard work but so do the teams because they’re putting together fundraisers and working together. Some people may have just had their cancer diagnosis or just lost someone and that’s what’s rallied them together so it’s a pretty emotional thing and to come out and fight against it publicly that’s at least worth a free sausage,” Ms Heldon said.
The 2018 Relay for Life will be held at Barden Park on October 20 and 21. The committee is hoping to raise at least $50,000, which will go to local projects such as the recently launched Transport to Treatment which helps cancer patients.
It’s also a way to provide information on the services Cancer Council offered, Ms Heldon said.
Ten teams and 28 participants have already signed up.
This year, Ms Helson said there was going to be a bigger focus on the fundraising events teams could do at the event.
“A lot of the teams don’t know what to do beforehand and they think they have to have a big trivia night or family fun day. But this way they might be able to do a sausage sizzle or if someone has a really good soup recipe they can serve soup, really easy things so teams don’t feel quite so overwhelmed with the fundraising side of things,” she said.
There will also be an increased push this year for towns outside Dubbo to get more involved. While it was held in Dubbo, Ms Helson said the event was for all of Orana.
Ms Heldon said she was especially grateful to Macquarie Credit Union for sponsoring the Relay for Life.
An information session for participants will be held on August 28. More information will be released on the Orana Relay for Life Facebook page.
